The article analyzes the use of innovative, primarily, information and communication technologies to increase the efficiency of students' acquisition of competencies defined by the concept of the New ...Ukrainian School (NUS), native and foreign language, and economic competencies, in particular. The growing need to use the latest technologies to properly respond to the challenges and threats faced by the society, economy and educational process of Ukraine is pointed out. The prospects of using a hybrid model of the educational process, game technologies, and methods of "immersion" in the subject, first of all for learning languages, using the latest technologies, have been determined. It is indicated that proper provision of the primary school with modern equipment is the condition for the use of advanced technologies. This also forms a strategic task in the training of future teachers, first of all, primary school teachers, which consists in the need to ensure the training of teachers at the level of international standards, their natural orientation in the application of innovative technologies, the effective use of digital infrastructure, digital skills, smart education, robotics in the educational process. Prospective directions of innovative technologies, which provide a synergistic effect of pedagogical and technological innovations, have been identified. It is indicated that the effectiveness of the methods of "immersion" in the subject increases with the introduction of complex immersive technology. The use of immersive technologies in the educational process was stratified. It is indicated that the latest information technologies open the possibility of analyzing the data about students and their educational activities available in the network. This makes it possible to form an individual portrait of the student and to implement a strategy and teaching tactics that are aimed at ensuring the success of this particular student, to offer such an interaction between the student and educational materials that would ensure the best result, to reveal the connection between the individual characteristics of the student's educational behavior and effectiveness of his education, to prepare informational and pedagogical tools individually developed for and aimed at a specific student. It has been proven that such provision of the educational process with the necessary equipment requires significant resources. The conducted analysis proved that the average expenses per class for the implementation of modern information technologies in the educational process should increase more than twice, which is an unaffordable task for the country's budget. This requires the mobilization of all resources - both budgetary and extra-budgetary funds - in order to solve the problem of providing the educational process with the necessary equipment. The direction of transformation of education financing, which is based on a project approach, is proposed with the implementation of systematic coordination of projects and task fragmentation. The mathematical formalization of financial coordination of educational projects and optimization of costs by sources of financing and optimization of the efficiency of the financing process for achieving a new quality of education and strategic goals defined in the concept of NUS is also proposed.
Grit, viz. a combination of perseverance and passion for long-term goals, is a psychological variable that has recently attracted scholarly attention. Research along this psychological line is ...significant because it complements the rich on-going research on cognitive variables. The seminal research by Plonsky (2018) and colleagues has validated an instrument to measure what they call ‘L2 grit’ in the Iranian EFL context. As a partial replication of the above research in the Chinese context, the present study confirmed the two-fold structure of L2 grit identified in the seminal research, and found that the selected socio-biographical variables (e.g. multilingualism, L2 joy, age, and gender) were linked to L2 grit to varying degrees. Additionally, this study proposes providing a range of effect sizes for each predictor in hierarchical regression as a more refined data analysis approach. Suggestions (e.g. considering a wider multilingual population) are made for future research.
•This study was the first (partial) replication of the very first L2 grit study.•It confirmed the factorial structure of the L2 grit scale in the Chinese context.•The influence of seven sociobiographical variables on L2 grit was examined.•Language competence, L2 joy, and age statistically significantly predicted L2 grit.•A more refined data analysis method based on hierarchical regression was proposed.

The rapid development of digitalization has enriched ways of textualization, which in turn has prompted scholars in the writing sector to call for broadening the perspective of composition teaching by ...including multimodal literacy in the program. While I agree that it is necessary to adjust the writing program in light of the development, I argue that for L2 writing courses the focus should still be on the language since it is the language that has frustrated L2 students most in their writing in English.

Language competency is a complex ability related to four skills at once. Many studies also state that using media in learning can improve language competence. For this reason, the research results ...should be evaluated to determine whether the study results can be trusted and accounted for statistically. For this reason, this research aims to compile and statistically evaluate the results of an independent study that examines learning media on language competence in elementary school students. The research method used is meta-analysis research. The study search was conducted from 2018 to 2023 in the Google Scholar database. The search results provided 108 studies that met the inclusion requirements for extraction, resulting in 111 data comparisons being examined. Calculate the magnitude of the effect of learning media on language competence in elementary school students using Microsoft Excel. This research obtained an effect size of 2.180 in the Very Large category, with a mean population correlation coefficient of 0.581. These results indicate a positive influence between the learning media teachers use on elementary school students' language competence. For this reason, it is recommended to develop or use media in language learning so that elementary school students' language competence can increase, in addition to the need for further research involving many studies related to this competence.

The COVID-19 pandemic has had a major impact on learning, especially student learning motivation, which also has an impact on the Arabic language competence of high school students when they turn ...into university students. Students are not only required to be able to learn independently but also have to answer the challenges of the 21st century, especially to communicate using Arabic. The purpose of this article is to explore university students' motivation in learning Arabic after online learning and its correlation with their Arabic language competence. A quantitative approach was used with a bivariate correlation research method. The population of this study was students at UIN Raden Fatah Palembang with a sample of 1213 people with diverse scientific specifications. The research analysis was conducted with prerequisite test followed by correlation test and univariate test. The results showed that the motivation to learn Arabic language of students of Arabic language education study program has a positive and significant correlation with the level of Arabic language competence despite having gone through online learning for several years when students are in secondary education. Therefore, it is important for Arabic teachers to continue to innovate in learning by using digital learning media to increase motivation in Arabic. Learning should also be based on digital literacy, so that students can become agents of change by breaking the shackles of the lack of infrastructure in schools and replacing them with media that are ready to access and fill content related to Arabic language learning.
As an effective tool to advance language competence, writing papers collaboratively has the characteristic of improving author language skills, providing authors with opportunities to practice ...language skills in meaningful contexts. As authors collaborate to yield a paper, they get exposure to grammar genres, structures, and expressions. Concurrently, during the process, language is applied to communicate ideas effectively. This paper aims to investigate whether collaboration is really a beneficial aspect for authors. This qualitative investigation was embedded in case study design to uncover truths experienced in real-life situations. To collect data, semi-structured interviews were administered to five university scholars chosen from a population of authors reported to have successfully written publishable papers. It emerged as major findings that individual comprehension can be improved when authors collaborate on paper writing, and, as authors receive written feedback from each other, language competence advances. Although previous publications on writing collaboratively exist, research is silent on improved language competence acquired through this practice. It is concluded that individual comprehension can be improved by collaborative paper writing as the process provides opportunities for authors to justify and discuss their ideas. As they work collaboratively, authors deepen their understanding of the material and enhance their language skills.
This study aims to examine the communication strategies used by students in the activity of English learning-teaching as a second language. This qualitative research was conducted using an ...ethnographic approach with spoken discourse of students as the object. Data was collected from 27 students in the 9th grade at Ifako International Secondary School as the informants. The research data were collected through observation and informal interview. The data were then analyzed using performance analysis technique, namely an analysis based on the speech that occurs naturally and the linguistic competence. This present study found that students used two communication strategies, namely verbal communication strategy and nonverbal communication strategy, in English teaching-learning activity. The results of this study indicate that students use communication strategies with four objectives, namely to maintain the communication, to express a certain intention, to master language competence, and to master certain forms of strategic competence.
•Emotion lexicon predicts children’s emotion understanding beyond general vocabulary.•Size of emotion lexicon predicts emotion regulation knowledge in preschool age.•Ratio of emotion lexicon size to ...depth predicts emotion understanding in school age.
Positive associations between children’s general language skills and emotion understanding are well documented. Concurrently, research from other domains highlights the importance of domain-specific language skills for conceptual development. The current study examined the relative contributions of emotion-specific and general vocabulary to individual differences in multiple early-acquired components of emotion understanding (e.g., facial emotion recognition) and later-acquired components (e.g., knowledge of emotion regulation strategies) in 4- to 9-year-old children (N = 86). Emotion-specific vocabulary was measured by size (i.e., number of emotion words children use) and depth (i.e., adult-like use of emotion words). Findings emphasize the role of children’s emotion-specific vocabulary rather than general vocabulary for early-acquired and later-acquired components of emotion understanding, especially when measured by expressive tasks. At preschool age, the size of emotion-specific vocabulary explains children’s knowledge of emotion regulation strategies. In primary school, however, the depth of emotion-specific vocabulary becomes relevant for individual differences in emotion understanding.

The need for IT professionals with fluency in foreign languages becomes increasingly critical as the Kazakhstani government implements steps to foster IT innovation. However, there are structural, ...geographical and professional imbalances in the interaction of supply and demand for IT professionals who can speak a foreign language in the modern labour market which is the main problem that is currently hindering the growth of the IT sector in Kazakhstan. The aim of this study was to assess the development of subject communicative language competencies (a) in linguistic or grammatical ability and (b) in discourse ability in first-year students for the proposed author's innovative learning technique in the educational process as well as the appropriate technological and systematic procedures. A mixed-research method was used in this study. The study involved 365 learners in the "Informatics" direction at the International University of Information Technologies in Almaty, Kazakhstan during the school year 2021-2022. According to the findings, the experiment participants did not develop subject-related communicative language competencies. The results show that the degree of capability formation is not satisfactory. 52.8% is the basic level, 41.6% is the production point and only 5.8% is the high level. Positive dynamics shaping learners' subject-related language communication competencies were identified as a result of the implementation of innovative techniques. This paper contributes to the research on teaching IT students in developing countries and highlights the most important factors that contribute to improve the level of subject-related communicative language competencies of IT students.
Applied linguists have been exploring approaches to second language acquisition and competence that move beyond a prioritization of cognition and grammar that was derived from the foundational ...structuralist legacy in linguistics. Recently, for example, they have collaborated in putting together an integrated alternative model (Douglas Fir Group, 2016) to move theory and pedagogy forward. Shifting further yet toward the material locus and spatiotemporal conditioning of communication, this article reports on the communicative practices of international STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) scholars. Its data analysis uses a spatial orientation informed by schools such as new materialism, post-humanism, and actor network theory, influenced largely by scholars in material and spatial sciences. The article calls for a fuller materialization, embodiment, and performativity in theorizing language competence than currently conceptualized in applied linguistics.
