The serious leisure perspective (SLP), which divides leisure activities into three distinct forms (serious, casual, and project-based), has been developed by Robert Stebbins over the last 40 years. ...This article evaluates the perspective as theory and as a typology. The theory associated with the SLP concerning social worlds, identification, and optimal leisure lifestyles is found to be generally untested because it has been developed in relation to the serious leisure form only. The validity of the typology is questioned on the grounds that "seriousness" is a continuum, rather than discrete categories, and that most leisure activities can be engaged in with varying degrees of seriousness. It is proposed that the SLP be replaced by a more flexible, open research approach, the Leisure Experience Perspective, which consolidates features of the SLP and other research traditions and theoretical perspectives.

As the COVID-19 pandemic continues to alter daily life and its long-term impact remains unknown, research is needed to examine the effects of this unprecedented pandemic on public health and ...well-being. Leisure has the potential to facilitate personal growth and to serve as a vehicle for personal transformation under stressful circumstances. The purpose of the study is two-fold: (1) to explore leisure experiences and participation during the COVID-19 global pandemic; and (2) to examine how leisure experiences and participation contribute to stress-related growth during this public health crisis. A total of 470 U.S. residents completed an online survey in July 2020. The results indicated a decline in participation for all types of leisure activities. Changes in leisure activities varied by age and income but social activities had the most substantial decline, followed by outdoor and physical activities. Leisure needs, satisfaction, and social activities were statistically significant predictors of stress-related growth during the pandemic. These findings provide further understanding of how the COVID-19 pandemic has impacted engagement in leisure activities, and additional evidence that participating in leisure can facilitate personal growth during periods of adversity.

Nostalgia is one of the most critical constructs influencing individuals' future behavioral intention. However, a measurement scale for nostalgia has not been widely explored and has not been ...developed in the context of leisure. Therefore, the study aimed to develop a scale, based on the classification of nostalgia, to measure nostalgic leisure behavior. This study followed a rigorous scale development procedure to achieve adequate psychometric properties. The leisure nostalgia scale developed in this study contributes to a deeper understanding of nostalgia in leisure and expands extant knowledge by building a comprehensive conceptual framework in leisure research. In addition, a better understanding of leisure nostalgia allows researchers to extend this model with other leisure constructs and more effectively explain leisure participation in various populations. Drawing on the findings of this study, managers in the leisure industry can develop and implement effective strategies to appeal to leisure participants and promote business competitiveness.

In the present work, we report findings from a study of motivations for leisure participation and its associations with psychological engagement. In a sample of 183 undergraduate university students, we found that three of the five hypothesized motivators positively and significantly predicted greater psychological engagement. Specifically, greater psychological engagement was related to leisure participation motivated by a desire to learn and exercise skills and abilities, protect the self (for example, to alleviate guilt by helping others), and because of opportunities presented by others. favorable attitudes towards involvement.

The purpose of this study was to examine the recreational experiences of African American residents in Hillsborough County, Florida at varied levels: institutional, recreational, and personal. To ...investigate the intricacy of perceptions and experiences among African Americans in the context of outdoor recreation, the first author used qualitative methods to provide in-depth investigation into African American residents' perceptions of recreation in Hillsborough County, Florida. Our analysis revealed four overarching themes: 1) Racialised Outdoor Leisure Identity, 2) Representation Matters, 3) Recreational Constraints and Opportunities, and 4) Equity in Leisure Experiences. The findings of this study add to the literatures on outdoor leisure identity and recreation of African Americans and their perceptions of outdoor identity, why representation matters, how safety constraints are negotiated, especially among women respondents, and of residents' perceptions of equity within their parks.

Work-leisure facilitation refers to the extent to which a person's engagement in work/leisure domain contributes to enhancing the functioning of leisure/work domain. Work-leisure facilitation ...comprises two directions: work-to-leisure and leisure-to-work facilitations. The main purpose of this study is to investigate the relationships among work-leisure facilitation, work/leisure self-efficacy, and work/leisure satisfaction, and to explore the possible mediating effect of work/leisure self-efficacy. Four hundred tour leaders/guides in Taiwan were chosen as the respondents by using the systematic sampling from the Association of Tour Leaders and the Association of Tour Guides in Taiwan. The results showed that work-to-leisure/leisure-to-work facilitation has significant positive effects on work/leisure satisfaction, leisure/work satisfaction, and leisure/work self-efficacy; leisure/work self-efficacy has a significantly positive effect on leisure/work) satisfaction. Moreover, the results also showed that work/leisure self-efficacy has a partial mediating effect on the relationship between leisure-to-work/work-to-leisure facilitation and work/leisure satisfaction.

Loneliness that negatively influences well-being in international students is common, particularly during the COVID-19 pandemic. Leisure may help international students reduce loneliness. To inform ...efforts to promote well-being for international students, this study examined whether two types of leisure social support (leisure emotional support and leisure instrumental support) and flow while participating in leisure predict loneliness. In total, 332 international students who attended a private university in Taiwan participated in the study. In-person surveys were used to measure leisure emotional support, leisure instrumental support, flow, and loneliness. Hierarchical regression analysis was conducted to analyze data. Results indicated that high levels of leisure emotional support and flow predicted low levels of loneliness, but high levels of leisure instrumental support did not. The study addresses implications of these results in terms of reducing loneliness experienced by international students, without depending highly on the presence of others.

Satisfaction with leisure contributes to life satisfaction, marital satisfaction, health, and overall wellbeing. It is not clear, however, how individuals develop expectations for satisfaction with ...their leisure experiences. In this study, we propose a cultural basis for leisure expectations. In particular, we model cultural consonance in leisure, the degree to which individuals, in their own behavior, match cultural conventions for appropriate or favored leisure, as a mediator between leisure constraints and leisure satisfaction based on data from urban, suburban, and rural Taiwan. We then apply the same model to data previously gathered in Mainland China and Taiwan. Results indicate that the new model fits all three data sets well and that, under most conditions, cultural consonance mediates the relationship between leisure constraints and leisure satisfaction.
