The article deals with the semantic and stylistic realities of contemporary English-language journalism, briefly lists the main features and characteristics of the functional style of journalistic ...texts, outlines the techniques that are used in them, and names the particular qualities of their translation in Ukrainian language. Also there are given several examples of the usage of figures of speech and tropes in contemporary English-language journalism such as epithets, metaphors, stylistic comparisons, metonymies and allusions. Also the article provides an example of the difficulties of translation of aforementioned stylistic figures. The article brings the brief summarized data on the frequency of usage of the stylistic tropes and the figures showing the most productive and the least productive forms. The close relation between language of modern journalism and the cultural environment and impact of this factor during translation is also under consideration of the article. Moreover the article indicates priori conditions of translator language competence, as well as the problems arising on the translation of journalistic materials and ways of overcoming them. As the conclusion the article defines the main translation tasks and connects the methods of resolving the translation obstacles often arising during the translation of modern English-language journalistic texts with the solution of the main translation challenges.
This paper analyzes a collection of poems Baščanska ploča – poema (The Baška Tablet – poem) written by the contemporary Croatian writer Mile Pešorda. The initial task of this study is to examine the ...level of sensitivity of the author's pen to the oldest period of Croatian literary history. Secondly, the underlying citation signals of Pešorda’s poems and their intertextual connection with monuments of medieval Croatian culture will be identified, and all this due to the precious stone of Croatian cultural heritage – the stone Tablet of Baška. The methods and procedures of stylistic analysis will be carried out and therefore will allow the identification of stylistic language features on all linguistic levels – from graphematics and graphetics to the syntax. Due to previous analyses that have acknowledged the Baška Tablet as a monument that can also be perceived through the symbolism of numbers, this paper comes with an important appendix, which represents a new perspective and an attempt of comparative numerological analysis that includes the Baška Tablet and Pešorda’s poems.
Syntactic stylistic devices such as inversion and detached sentence members are often found in different functional styles of Ukrainian and English languages. In addition, many linguists and scholars ...in the field of stylistics in their scientific papers advert to this type of stylistic devices. Taking into account the above factors, it should be noted that the study of lexical and semantic features of inversion and detachment will serve as a significant theoretical contribution to future developments in this field of linguistics. Our research is devoted to the investigation of main syntactic constructions of inversion and detachment, their classifications, main lexico-semantic features and quantitative ratio based on the text of Ray Bradbury's Dandelion wine. The paper develops the research ideas from two perspectives: theoretical, which highlights the views of Ukrainian and foreign scholars on the concepts under consideration and survey methodology, and practical part, which presents the results of the study. The results of the study provide examples, analysis, classification and comparison of syntactic constructions that contain inversion and detachment from the Ukrainian and English versions of Ray Bradbury's Dandelion wine. In the process of data collection and the analysis of semantic units a set of overall linguistic research methods have been applied: observation, induction, comparison, experiment (statistical method), structural method (transformational analysis), method of semantic and stylistic analysis (stylistic analysis), contrastive method. The advantage of our approach, which we have chosen to study inversion and detachment, is its interdisciplinarity, as we have used the methods of corpus and computer linguistics to study stylistic phenomena. We believe that such an approach can yield positive results and be the first step in creating a parallel corpus or a linguistic program based on the results of the study. The results obtained during the investigation of research topic have many applications in such fields of computational linguistics as corpus linguistics and automated test analysis. They will be used for further creation of an English-Ukrainian parallel corpus of stylistic units or a linguistic program for the computer-assisted search of expressive means and stylistic devices in the text.
This article seeks to demonstrate how socially relevant linguistic analysis, using a sufficiently ‘extravagant’ theoretical framework, can provide a founded argument for the value of particular ...literary texts – and more generally the social, cultural and intellectual worth of literature – in a school curriculum. Through a stylistic analysis using Systemic Functional Grammar of a poem by one of Singapore’s foremost writers, it examines how its language patterns artistically coalesce into a secondary patterning to encode important socio-historical information and thematic issues of relevance to National Education, a key concern of Singapore schools. Thus, it reveals and suggests how literature can be used to meet this concern, as well as another key concern, the stimulation of critical and creative thinking, while simultaneously enhancing awareness of the power of language in the construction of meaning. In so doing, it suggests how literature should have a central place in the school curriculum.

Much has been written about crime fiction, and treatments of the subject vary greatly. Whereas, for instance, some writers view such material as no more than entertaining, crime fiction has been ...elsewhere treated more seriously. Theorists, critics and analysts have described both the history of the genre and changing attitudes to it (Ball, 1976; Winks, 1980; Roth, 1995; Messent, 1997; Knight, 1980, 2004; Scaggs, 2005; Horsley, 2005 and so on). According to Knight (1980: 1), less evaluative approaches have tried to establish why crime fiction is so compelling; psychoanalysts found the basis of the form’s patterns in the psychic anxieties of writers and readers, while another type of analysis has seen the social attitudes and the pressures of the modern environment as the basic drive in crime fiction. Overall, though the development of the genre was traced by literary critics, ‘culturally’ attuned critics, psychoanalysts and sociologists, little linguistic work has been undertaken in the area. It is in Chapter 3 that I aim to apply analytical stylistic frameworks to crime fiction extracts, and hence put forward the argument that the discipline of linguistic stylistics has a great deal of insight to offer as to the genre’s form, preferred structures, and effects.
AbstractThis paper presents an analysis of the verbal negation of declarative main clauses in Dawurotsuwa. This study aims to describe verbal negation in Dawurotsuwa, a language that is scarcely ...described. Having prepared phrases and sentences for elicitation, which are appropriate and purposefully fitting to the verbal predication negation in English and Amharic, the data were collected from native speakers of Dawurotsuwa. The finding shows that the language suffixes negative markers to the root. Verbal negation in main clauses is formed by suffixing the morphemes -kk-/-nn- to the verb along with other inflectional suffixes, such as person, number, and aspect. The negative morpheme -kk- is used for all persons except 3SG.M. The morpheme -nn- is used for 3SG.M and infinite verb forms. Negation in Dawurotsuwa is asymmetric, in which the structural difference between affirmative and corresponding negative goes beyond the mere existence of the negative marker. The negative and perfective aspect marker co-occur together though the perfective aspect marker is substituted by another marker in the negative. The imperfective aspect is not marked in the language. The language emphasizes negation by attaching -ttenne to the verb following the person and number marker. In ellipsis, the morpheme -kka is suffixed to the pronouns or nominal elements for representing all other elements of the antecedent clause omitted in both affirmatives and negatives.
