Evoking the “ Myth of the Centre”. The Carolingian and Lotharingian Imaginaries in the Belgian Territorial Claims against Germany after 1945
The reference to historical imaginaries and legitimizations for territorial settlements after a military conflict can be considered “ classical”. This contribution aims to show how Carolingian and Lotharingian imaginaries influenced certain actors of expansionist movements in Belgium after 1945, the continued existence of which constituted an echo of 1918. Even if the Belgian territorial demands at the expense of Germany were, after all, hardly grounded in such discourses, this contribution highlights the fact that the discourse aiming to transform Aix-la-Chapelle and Cologne into “ Belgian” cities, insisting on the kinship between “ Belgians” and “ Rhinelanders”, would serve as a base for the rapprochement between old enemies in the 1950s. From then on, the historical landscape between Meuse and Rhine was integrated in the discourse on the “ Occident” (the West) the political organization of which was considered as of utmost necessity, given the impending Soviet menace.

Of Empires and Borders. The Nature of Borders from the ninth to the thirteenth century
This paper deals with the perception of borders and related practices in the Frankish and Holy Roman Empire between the ninth and the thirteenth century. Adopting a diachronic approach, it analyses how spatial organisation evolved, from the ninthcentury division treaties up to the border inquiries of the thirteenth century. The frontier was transformed from a rather imprecise and oft-moving border, presented in the texts as a list of place names, to a delimitation attested by local witnesses on behalf of administrative authorities (count, duke, king, pope). And so, rivers such as the Rhine and the Meuse were reference points rather than real frontier lines. From the thirteenth century onward, frontier inquiries were launched to resolve conflicts between local agents disputing each other’s authority on border territories.
