The genetic basis of tolerance to abiotic stresses, i.e. the major constraints to maize production, is poorly understood. The utilization of molecular markers and genomics platforms offer ...unprecedented opportunities to identify, select and clone genes influencing tolerance to abiotic stresses, mainly a quantitative trait. The dissection of the genetic basis of quantitative traits into their single components, the so-called QTLs (Quantitative Trait Loci), provides a more direct access to valuable genetic diversity for important physiological processes that regulate the adaptive response of maize to abiotic stresses. This, in turn, enables us to utilize marker-assisted selection (MAS) for enhancing maize performance and/or producing isogenic lines at target QTLs. A large number of QTLs have been described to influence yield in maize exposed to abiotic stresses, particularly drought and chilling. The results of these studies are herein summarized. Despite the impressive list of QTLs so far described and the recent advances in high throughput profiling, the overall impact of MAS and other applications of genomics on the release of maize hybrids more tolerant to abiotic stresses has been negligible. Improving tolerance to abiotic stresses through marker technologies will require a deeper integration between MAS, conventional breeding methodologies and other interdisciplinary approaches. In the future, the cloning of major QTLs affecting tolerance to abiotic stresses coupled with other genomics platforms will offer additional opportunities for a more effective exploitation of the allelic richness present in maize germplasm collections
La base genetica della tolleranza agli stress abiotici, cioè ai limiti principali alla produzione del mais, è scarsamente conosciuta. L'utilizzazione di marcatori molecolari e di piattaforme di genomica offre opportunità senza precedenti per identificare, selezionare e clonare geni che influenzano la tolleranza agli stress abiotici, carattere prevalentemente quantitativo. La scissione della base genetica dei caratteri quantitativi nei loro singoli componenti, i cosiddetti QTL (Quantitative Trait Loci, loci di caratteri quantitativi), fornisce un accesso più diretto alla preziosa diversità genetica relativa a importanti processi fisiologici che regolano la risposta adattativa del mais agli stress abiotici. Questo, a sua volta, ci consente di utilizzare la selezione assistita da marcatori (MAS) per migliorare la performance del mais e/o produrre linee isogeniche a target QTL. E' stato descritto un largo numero di QTL che influenzano la resa nel mais esposto a stress abiotici, in particolare siccità e freddo. I risultati di questi studi sono sintetizzati in questo contributo. Nonostante la lista imponente di QTL finora descritti e i progressi recenti nel profiling ad alta produttività, l'impatto complessivo della MAS e delle altre applicazioni della genomica sulla produzione di ibridi di mais più tolleranti agli stress abiotici è stato finora trascurabile. Il miglioramento della tolleranza agli stress abiotici mediante le tecnologie dei marcatori richiederà un'integrazione più profonda fra MAS, metodi di miglioramento convenzionali e altri approcci disciplinari. In futuro, la clonazione dei QTL principali che influenzano la tolleranza agli stress abiotici abbinata ad altre piattaforme di genomica offrirà opportunità aggiuntive per uno sfruttamento più efficace della ricchezza allelica presente nelle collezioni di germoplasma di mais.

Olive mill pomace produced by low water consuming mill technologies were composted with chopped wheat straw in a forced aerated static pile. During the process temperature, oxygen consumption, ...moisture content, pH, electrical conductivity, total organic carbon, total extractable carbon, humic and fulvic acids, nitrogen, C/N ratio, phenols, lipids and lignin were determined. Urease and casein-hydrolising protease activities were also assayed. The humification was assayed following the degree of humification, the humification rate and the humification index, which respectively reached the values of 12, 89 and 15% during the maturation phase. The analyses of final product revealed the presence of considerable amounts of mineral nutrients and stabilized organic matter and absence of harmful levels of heavy metals. Una sansa di olive prodotta mediante tecnologie di frantoio oleario a basso consumo di acqua e' stata compostata con paglia di frumento tritata in un cumulo ad aerazione forzata. Durante il processo sono stati determinati temperatura, consumo di ossigeno, tenore di umidita', pH, conducibilita' elettrica, carbonio organico totale, carbonio estraibile totale, acidi umici e fulvici, azoto, rapporto C/N, fenoli, lipidi e lignina. Sono state anche controllate le attivita' ureasica e proteasica caseina-idrolizzante. L'umificazione e' stata verificata seguendo il grado di umificazione, il livello di umificazione e l'indice di umificazione, che raggiungevano rispettivamente il 12, 89 e 15% durante la fase di maturazione. Le analisi del prodotto finale hanno evidenziato la presenza di quantita' considerevoli di elementi nutritivi minerali e di sostanza organica stabilizzata e assenza di livelli dannosi di metalli pesanti. An experimental trial was carried out on seven laying hens, fed a control (C) feed or feeds containing: linseed oil (L), fish oil (F), DHA-rich oil from micro-alga Schizochytrium sp., without (A) or ...with 5 ppm potassium iodine (AI) or sodium selenite (ASe) or both salts (AISe). Selenium, zinc and other mineral contents were evaluated in egg yolks. At the end of the trial, selenium content had significantly increased (P0.001), while zinc concentration had decreased (P0.05) in yolks of ASe and AISe groups. Ca, Mn, Fe, Cu, Cd and Pb did not differ among yolks of different groups, except cadmium, whose concentration had decreased in AISe group, confirming an effect of iodine and selenium on deposition of this metal.
Una prova è stata condotta su sette gruppi di galline ovaiole, alimentate con un mangime di controllo (C) o contenente: olio di lino (L), olio di pesce (F), olio ricco di DHA derivante dalla micro-alga Schizochytrium sp. in presenza o meno (A) di 5 ppm di ioduro di potassio (AI) o di selenito di sodio (ASe) oppure di entrambi i sali (AISe). I contenuti di selenio e zinco e di altri minerali sono stati valutati nei tuorli delle uova. A fine prova la concentrazione di selenio era aumentata in modo significativo (P0,001), mentre quella dello zinco si era ridotta (P0,05) nei tuorli dei gruppi ASe e AISe. I valori di Ca, Mn, Fe, Cu, Cd e Pb non differirono tra i tuorli dei vari gruppi, a parte il cadmio, la cui concentrazione si era ridotta nel gruppo AISe, attestando una influenza di iodio e selenio sulla deposizione di questo metallo
Pokusna skupina sastojala se od 10 ždrjebadi s razvojnom ortopedskom bolešću, šest muške i četiri ženske, u dobi od tri do šest mjeseci, pasmine kraljevski nizozemski toplokrvnjak. Kontrolna skupina ...sastojala se od šest zdrave ždrjebadi. Sva je ždrjebad bila klinički pregledana na hromost, otekline zglobova i bol. Klinički, radiografski i patološki nalazi upućivali su na razvojnu ortopedsku bolest. Koncentracija bakra u ždrjebadi s razvojnom bolešću bila je značajno manja nego u ždrjebadi kontrolne skupine (0,094 ± 0,011 mg/kg u odnosu na 0,932 ± 0,068 mg/kg; P<0,05). Serumske razine cinka iznosile su 1,828 ± 0,180 mg/kg u pokusne skupine u odnosu na 0,9257 ± 0,052 mg/kg u kontrolne skupine, P>0,05, dok su serumske razine kalcija iznosile 187,836 ± 7,921 μg/dL u odnosu na 150,912 ± 5,271 μg/dL u kontrolne skupine, P>0,05, te razine fosfora 247,339 ± 10,729 μg/dL u pokusne u odnosu na 190,470 ± 5,775 μg/dL u kontrolne skupine, P>0,05. Nisu ustanovljene statistički značajne razlike između istraživane i kontrolne skupine s obzirom na razine Ca, P i Zn. Zaključuje se da je razvojna ortopedska bolest u ždrjebadi povezana s razinom Cu u serumu. Bakar je važan element za rast ždrjebadi.
The content of inorganic bromine was determined in the edible tissues of vegetable crops grown in soil treated with methyl bromide under standard or gas virtually impermeable plastic tarps. Of the ...crops tested, the highest bromine concentrations were detected in lettuce leaves. Tomatoes, sweet pepper, zucchini and cantaloupes, when cropped soon after soil fumigation, also accumulated high bromine contents. However, concentrations resulted drastically reduced in cantaloupes, as second crop without any further soil treatment. Bromine contents were moderate, although significantly higher with respect to the control, in string bean pods. Soil application of methyl bromide did not increase, with respect to the control, inorganic bromine content in potato tubers and carrot tap roots. The use of gas virtually impermeable tarping plastics, such as Bromotec and Eva, generally increased bromine accumulation in vegetable crops, indicating that methyl bromide emission into the atmosphere was much reduced compared to soil tarped with standard plastic
Sono stati determinati i contenuti di bromo in ortaggi prodotti in terreni trattati con bromuro di metile somministrato sotto coperture plastiche standard o del tipo virtualmente impermeabile ai gas. Delle colture saggiate, le piu' alte concentrazioni dell'alogeno sono state trovate in foglie di lattuga e insalata. Pomodori, peperoni, zucchine e meloni, quando coltivati subito dopo le fumigazioni, avevano anche alti contenuti di bromo, che pero' sono risultati drasticamente ridotti in meloni coltivati in seconda coltura sullo stesso terreno senza ulteriori trattamenti geodisinfestanti. Contenuti modesti di bromo, ancorche' significativamente superiori a quelli rilevati in baccelli prodotti in terreno non trattato, sono stati osservati in fagiolini. Le somministrazioni di bromuro di metile al terreno non hanno incrementato rispetto ai testimoni le concentrazioni di bromo inorganico in tuberi di patata e fittoni di carota. L'impiego di plastiche di copertura Bromotec ed Eva, virtualmente impermeabili ai gas, ha indotto generalmente un maggior accumulo di bromo inorganico negli ortaggi, indicando che il fumigante ha avuto una dispersione nell'atmosfera minore che se somministrato sotto plastica standard

The effect of the modification of diet starch content on milk composition and on its nitrogen and mineral fractions was evaluated. Ten Italian Friesian primiparous cows were randomly assigned to two ...groups and fed a basal total mixed ration, (BSD, basal starch diet, 24.9% starch/DM) until 42 days in milking (DIM). At 43 DIM, 5 animals (control group, CTR) continued to receive the same ration and the remaining 5 cows (experimental group, EXP) were fed a low starch diet (LSD, 21.0% starch/DM) until 65 DIM, followed by a high starch diet (HSD, 28.3% starch/DM) from 66 to 85 DIM. From 86 DIM until 94 DIM, cows of the EXP group returned to the BSD. Milk samples were collected at 37, 50, 60, 70, 80, 94 DIM. Starch intake was lower for EXP at DIM 50, 60 and higher at 70 and 80 DIM (P0.01). Milk yield and fat corrected milk (FCM) did not vary between groups and sampling time, but HSD caused a significant (P0.05) reduction of milk fat in the EXP animals. NPN and MUN contents were affected by dietary treatments at 80 DIM (P0.05), being higher in CTR and lower in EXP in comparison to their basal values (37 DIM). The alpha sub(s1)-casein percentage at 80 and 94 DIM increased in EXP, but not in CTR, and a marked decrease of alpha sub(s2)-casein percentage for EXP at 94 DIM was observed (P0.05). Milk sodium content decreased at 80 and 94 DIM and sodium/potassium ratio was reduced after the return to the basal diet in EXP (94 DIM), indicating that dietary starch variations can be involved in control of epithelium integrity of mammary gland in early lactation
The content of Ag, Al, B, Ba, Ca, Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Fe, K, Li, Mg, Mn, Na, Ni, Pb, Rb, Sn, Sr, V and Zn in 60 wines from Trentino was determined by Inductively Coupled Plasma-Optical Emission ...Spectrometry (ICP-OES). Red wines had significantly higher levels of B, Ba, Fe, K, Li, Mg, Ni, Pb, Rb and Sr than white wines. Calcium was higher in white wines. The low amounts of Ca, Mg, Fe, Pb and Zn testify to the improvement in winery equipment in the last decades. Copper was at times in excess of technological needs, probably due to residues from spray treatments of the grapes
I contenuti di Ag, Al, B, Ba, Ca, Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Fe, K, Li, Mg, Mn, Na, Ni, Pb, Rb, Sn, Sr, V e Zn di 60 vini del Trentino sono stati analizzati per ICP- OES (Inductively Coupled Plasma-Optical Emission Spectrometry). I vini rossi avevano contenuti significativamente piu' elevati di B, Ba, Fe, K, Li, Mg, Ni, Pb, Rb e Sr rispetto ai vini bianchi. Il calcio era piu' alto nei vini bianchi. I bassi contenuti di Ca, Mg, Fe, Pb e Zn testimoniano i miglioramenti delle attrezzature di cantina avvenuti negli ultimi decenni. Talvolta il rame, probabile residuo di trattamenti in vigneto, e' risultato in eccesso rispetto alle necessita' tecnologiche
