A minimum wage is a labour and social law category dating back to the beginning of the 20th century but still existing in European states nowadays. The whole problem area about minimum wage, i.e. ...regulating this issue is a subject to special attention in the International Labour Organisation. Since 1993 the European Parliament Committee for social issues has recommended the introduction of a minimum wage according to national average wage for EU member states, which the majority of member states have already accepted. There are two different basic systems of minimum wage in the European Union; the first includes states that have arranged minimum wage by law or national intersectorial agreement and the second includes states with a minimum wage contract negotiated on a sectorial level between social partners. The minimum wage amount also varies from state to state in the European Union. Pursuant to Article 153 of the Treaty on the Functioning of the European Union there is not a unique model on arranging the minimum wage although there have been efforts to introduce a sole European minimum wage. The aim of this paper is to present minimum wage systems existing in the member states of the European Union and possible guidelines for introduction of a unique model of establishing a minimum wage in the European Union.
