The last floods in 1966, caused by high tides along the Slovenian coast, and as a consequence, significant damage to Piran's Sečovlje Salterns. High water demolished part of the embankment and usurped the Salterns. The damage which ensued was estimated up from 180 to 200 million in the currency used at this time - the dinar -. The effects of these floods were even more devastating because of the earlier rainy season, which had a huge effect upon the production of salt, and was the lowest crop of salt ever. At that time they knew the reparation of the flooded salt evaporation ponds and other facilities would not be repaired before the spring.- Information:- High tides along the Slovenian coast, which caused flooding and also enormous damage at Sečovlje Salterns as a consequence of these high tides.

The chapel was built in 1916 in memory of the Russian prisoners of war who were engaged in forced labour during World War I. They were ordered to ease access to the front and to construct a road across the Vršič pass, while during the construction they were buried under a massive avalanche. The exact number of victims is unknown. It is estimated the number is from 170 and maybe up to 300 Russian soldiers and up to 80 Austro-Hungarians soldiers.
In remembrance of the eightieth anniversary of this tragic event, Milan Kučan president of the Republic of Slovenia, Alojzij Šuštar Ljubljana Archbishop, Lojze Perko Belgrade Archbishop and Sergej Baburin vice president of the Russian State Duma attended the ceremony.
