Here we present a new flexible modeling tool for simulating the distribution of tracers in the modern ocean. A Working Environment for Simulating Ocean Movement and Elemental cycling within an Ocean ...Circulation Inverse Model, the AWESOME OCIM, is a transport matrix model (TMM) which is specifically designed to be easy, accessible, and intuitive, even for scientists without prior modeling experience. The AWESOME OCIM comes with a variety of selectable biogeochemical functions, including sources (atmospheric dust, hydrothermal vents, and seafloor nepheloid layers), internal cycling processes (biological uptake, remineralization, and scavenging), and sinks (radioactive decay and burial of particles in the sediments). A wide variety of elements can be simulated through different combinations of this suite of processes. We anticipate that the AWESOME OCIM will be a valuable tool for interpreting transect data from ocean surveys, particularly the trace-elements and isotopes distributions mapped by the ongoing GEOTRACES program. This manuscript provides an introduction to the philosophical, mathematical, and functional basis of the AWESOME OCIM.

Abstract
Copper (Cu) is an important micronutrient for marine organisms, which can also be toxic at elevated concentrations. Here, we present a new model of global ocean Cu biogeochemical cycling, ...constrained by GEOTRACES observations, with key processes including sources from rivers, dust, and sediments, biological uptake and remineralization of Cu, reversible scavenging of Cu onto sinking particles, conversion of Cu between labile and inert species, and ocean circulation. In order for the model to match observations, in particular the relatively small increase in Cu concentrations along the global “conveyor belt,” we find it is necessary to include significant external sources of Cu with a magnitude of roughly 1.3 Gmol yr
−1
, having a relatively stronger impact on the Atlantic Ocean, though the relative contributions of river, dust, and sediment sources are poorly constrained. The observed nearly linear increase in Cu concentrations with depth requires a strong benthic source of Cu, which includes the sedimentary release of Cu that was reversibly scavenged from the water column. The processes controlling Cu cycling in the Arctic Ocean appear to be unique, requiring both relatively high Cu concentrations in Arctic rivers and reduced scavenging in the Arctic. Observed partitioning of Cu between labile and inert phases is reproduced in the model by the slow conversion of labile Cu to inert in the whole water column with a half‐life of ∼250 years, and the photodegradation of inert Cu to labile in the surface ocean with a minimum half‐life of ∼2 years at the equator.
Plain Language Summary
Living organisms in the ocean need a small amount of copper (Cu) as a nutrient. Therefore, it is important to investigate the abundance of Cu in different regions of the ocean and the processes that influence the marine Cu cycle. We have developed a 3‐dimensional model to study the distribution of Cu constrained by ocean Cu observations while simulating the processes that bring Cu into the ocean and redistribute Cu within the ocean interior. We find that Cu distributions are largely controlled by ocean circulation and the external Cu sources into each ocean basin. Cu concentrations increase gradually from the surface to the deep ocean, and based on the model outputs, we interpret this feature as a combination of Cu‐particle interactions and Cu inputs from the seafloor. Cu cycling in the Arctic Ocean appears to be very different from other parts of the ocean, with large amounts of Cu in Arctic rivers and weak particle adsorption in the Arctic. These model results have important implications for understanding why Cu distributions in the ocean are different from other metals, and how Cu interacts with marine organisms, organic matter, and particles.
Key Points
Large Cu inputs to the Atlantic Ocean lead to a small Atlantic‐Pacific concentration gradient along the conveyor belt
Labile Cu is actively involved in ocean biogeochemical processes, while inert Cu builds up as water masses age
Arctic Ocean Cu is impacted by large riverine inputs, and possibly weaker scavenging in the water column

Ocean alkalinity plays a fundamental role in the apportionment of CO2 between the atmosphere and the ocean. The primary driver of the ocean's vertical alkalinity distribution is the formation of ...calcium carbonate (CaCO3) by organisms at the ocean surface and its dissolution at depth. This so‐called “CaCO3 counterpump” is poorly constrained, however, both in terms of how much CaCO3 is exported from the surface ocean, and at what depth it dissolves. Here, we created a steady‐state model of global ocean alkalinity using Ocean Circulation Inverse Model transport, biogeochemical cycling, and field‐tested calcite and aragonite dissolution kinetics. We find that limiting CaCO3 dissolution to below the aragonite and calcite saturation horizons cannot explain excess alkalinity in the upper ocean, and that models allowing dissolution above the saturation horizons best match observations. Linking dissolution to organic matter respiration, or imposing a constant dissolution rate both produce good model fits. Our best performing models require export between 1.1 and 1.8 Gt PIC y−1 (from 73 m), but all converge to 1.0 Gt PIC y−1 export at 279 m, indicating that both high‐ and low‐export scenarios can match observations, as long as high export is coupled to high dissolution in the upper ocean. These results demonstrate that dissolution is not a simple function of seawater CaCO3 saturation (Ω) and calcite or aragonite solubility, and that other mechanisms, likely related to the biology and ecology of calcifiers, must drive significant dissolution throughout the water column.
Plain Language Summary
The acid neutralizing capacity, or alkalinity, in the ocean surface affects how much CO2 the ocean can absorb from the atmosphere. Alkalinity is lost from the surface ocean when marine organisms make calcium carbonate (CaCO3) shells; in contrast, alkalinity is returned to seawater when shells dissolve. Both processes are not well quantified. Here, we created a model to constrain how much CaCO3 sinks out of the surface ocean, and at what depth it dissolves. We find that CaCO3 must dissolve in the upper ocean where calcite and aragonite—the two most common forms of CaCO3—are thermodynamically oversaturated. We also find that a range of CaCO3 exports—from 1.1 to 1.8 Gt PIC y−1—can match observations, as long as high export is coupled to high dissolution in the upper ocean. These results suggest that CaCO3 dissolution is not only controlled by seawater chemistry, and that other mechanisms, likely related to the biology and ecology of organisms that make CaCO3 shells, are important drivers of CaCO3 dissolution in the ocean.
Key Points
Restricting calcium carbonate (CaCO3) dissolution to below saturation horizons cannot reproduce excess alkalinity observations in the upper ocean
Exports between 1.1 and 1.8 Gt PIC y−1 (from 73 m) can match GLODAP observations, but models converge to 1.0 Gt PIC y−1 export at 279 m
In addition to seawater CaCO3 saturation and mineral solubility, other mechanisms drive CaCO3 dissolution throughout the water column

allo-Ocimene treatment induced defensive responses, such as induction of defense genes, accumulation of lignin and camalexin, and resistance against
Botrytis cinerea in
Arabidopsis. The profiles to ...respond against
allo-ocimene-treatment were largely similar to those against C6-aldehydes even though their structures are highly different each other.
Since volatile
allo-ocimene enhances resistance of
Arabidopsis thaliana against
Botrytis cinerea, we attempted to dissect the factors involved in this induced resistance. The penetration of
B. cinerea hyphae into
Arabidopsis epidermis and the growth of hyphae after penetration were suppressed on
allo-ocimene-treated leaves.
allo-Ocimene also induced lignification on cell walls and veins of the leaves. The treatment induced accumulation of antifungal substances including the
Arabidopsis phytoalexin, camalexin. Induction of lignification and accumulation of camalexin elicited by
B. cinerea infection on
Arabidopsis leaves after treating with
allo-ocimene was faster and more intense than that observed with the leaves that had not been treated with this volatile. This suggested that
allo-ocimene could prime defensive responses in
Arabidopsis.
allo-Ocimene enhanced resistance against
B. cinerea in an ethylene resistant mutant (
etr1-1), a jasmonic acid resistant mutant (
jar1-1) and a salicylic acid resistant mutant (
npr1-1). Thus, it is suggested that a signaling pathway independent for ETR1, JAR1 and NPR1 was operative to induce the resistance. The series of responses observed after
allo-ocimene-treatment was mostly similar to that observed after C6-aldehyde-treatment. The effect of C6-aldehyde-treatment has been largely accounted to the chemical reactivities of the compounds; however, from this result it can be suggested that resistance responses of
Arabidopsis could be induced by the volatiles mostly independent on their reactivities and that a common signaling pathway unaffected by the reactivities of compound was activated by the volatiles.
