This study compares the factors that determine consumer acceptance SMS (Short Message Service), NFC (Near Field Communication) and QR (Quick Response) mobile payment systems, in addition to ...determining the principal factors which influence the adoption of these mobile payment systems as means payment. A comprehensive review of the scientific literature has justified the development of a behavioral model that explains intention to use of mobile payments. The results and novelty of this research lies in the formulation of a different behavior according to the use given by users to each of the proposed payment tools. The conclusions and implications for management provide alternatives for companies.

We seek to deepen and increase knowledge on the evolution of scholarship regarding digital payments by highlighting the main interpretative strands in the literature and the changes, if any, in ...research approaches. Using bibliometric and scientometric measures, we explore research hotspots and developmental trends in digital payments to identify influential aspects of published contributions and research streams. Our sample consists of 723 articles published between 1985 and 2021 obtained from the Web of Science. The results show that the most investigated digital payments are mobile payments, with the main analysis methodologies typically linked to technology adoption models. This review, original in terms of sample size and methodology, advances knowledge on the evolution of innovative payments and guides scholars in visualising various research models.

Cybersecurity breaches pose a substantial concern in the digital era. We investigate how customers respond to multiple unexpected data breaches of their information in India. ...Difference-in-differences estimates show that digital payments declined by 9% relative to cash payments immediately after an unexpected data breach in a food delivery platform, but the gap disappeared three months later. Customer entry and exit also exhibit weak, short-lived changes. Additional analyses on bank and online grocery data breaches uncover even weaker effects of data breaches. Our findings imply that the perceived benefits of convenience outweigh the costs of payment security risks.

Using a proprietary data set containing more than 10 million transactions over 14 months from hundreds of grocery stores, we examine consumer payment choices at point of sale (POS) between cash and ...mobile, where the use of other methods (including cards) is minimal. We find that cash is the dominant method of payment. Nonetheless, the share of mobile payments has increased at the expense of cash payments over time. Importantly, we exploit price incentives for consumers using mobile payment to examine the price substitution between cash and mobile payments. Our results show that consumers are more likely to use mobile payment when they receive price incentives for doing so, and such an effect persists for a few days, even after the price incentive expires. Nonetheless, the price incentives are unlikely financed by additional transactions paid via mobile but subsidized by mobile payment providers. Interestingly, we find several factors that enhance and supplement the steering effect of price incentives. First, a larger monetary reward seems to induce a stronger impact of price incentive on mobile payment. Second, the steering effect of price incentive is stronger for stores that serve consumers who have frequently been using mobile payment and for price-sensitive consumers. Third, the additional mobile payments come from transactions that would not have occurred with price incentive and those that switch from cash transactions.

Healthcare reimbursements in the United States have been traditionally based on a fee-for-service (FFS) scheme, providing incentives for high
volume
of care, rather than
efficient
care. The new ...healthcare legislation tests new payment models that remove such incentives, such as the bundled payment (BP) system. We consider a population of patients (beneficiaries). The provider may reject patients based on the patient’s cost profile and selects the treatment intensity based on a risk-averse utility function. Treatment may result in success or failure, where failure means that unforeseen complications require further care. Our interest is in analyzing the effect of different payment schemes on outcomes such as the presence and extent of patient selection, the treatment intensity, the provider’s utility and financial risk, and the total system payoff. Our results confirm that FFS provides incentives for excessive treatment intensity and results in suboptimal system payoff. We show that BP could lead to suboptimal patient selection and treatment levels that may be lower or higher than desirable for the system, with a high level of financial risk for the provider. We also find that the performance of BP is extremely sensitive to the bundled payment value and to the provider’s risk aversion. The performance of both BP and FFS degrades when the provider becomes more risk averse. We design two payment systems, hybrid payment and stop-loss mechanisms, that alleviate the shortcomings of FFS and BP and may induce system optimum decisions in a complementary manner.

The major purpose of this research is to analyze and asses effect of COVID-19 impact on the frequency of using digital payment methods. The research was divided into five sections: volume and ...frequency of payment methods, payment methods characteristic and their fulfilment, technological trust of payment methods, expected changes in digital payment in the next 5 years, implementation of restrictions related to COVID-19 for the after the epidemic period. The post COVID-19 study was conducted in March 2022 in the form of a survey among university students. Data for pre COVID-19 study come from the author's article "Digital payment methods within Polish students - leading decision characteristics" from 2020 (survey conducted in November 2019). Main conclusions of the study (compared to pre COVID-19): there has been a significant reduction of popularity of cash payments, payments made via e-banking (web access), payments made with physical credit / debit card; has been a noticeable decline in the number of transactions made by respondents; respondents do not support forcing others to use only digital payment methods; despite the massive use of digital payments, respondents expect the spread of technologies ensuring anonymity in digital payments in the future.

Since the mid-1990s, the US payment system has undergone a transformation featuring a significant decline in the use of paper checks that is quite uneven across consumers and not well understood. ...This paper shows that characteristics of payment instruments are the most important determinants of instrument use by estimating econometric models of consumers’ adoption (extensive margin) and use (intensive margin) of checks plus six other payment instruments with a comprehensive new data source. Changes in the relative convenience and cost of checks can explain directly about 34% and 11%, respectively, of the 8.4 percentage point decline in check share from 2003 to 2006. Changes in the relative characteristics of substitute payment instruments also likely contributed indirectly to the decline in check use through an increase in the number of payment instruments per consumer, but the exact magnitude of this indirect channel cannot be identified with available data.
