Anhedonia in schizophrenia has been suggested to comprise a set of low-pleasure beliefs, defined as beliefs that certain things/activities were not pleasurable or that one does not feel pleasant ...generally. However, no instrument has been intentionally developed to specifically measure low-pleasure beliefs, and there is a paucity of empirical evidence for low-pleasure beliefs and their relationship with anhedonia in both patients with schizophrenia and individuals with high social anhedonia. We developed and validated the Beliefs About Pleasure Scale (BAPS) using non-clinical (Studies 1, 2 & 3), chronic schizophrenia (Study 2), and first episode schizophrenia (Study 3) samples. Across these studies, we examined psychometric properties of the BAPS, including temporal stability, internal consistency, factor structure, and convergent validity. The 22 BAPS items loaded onto 4 factors, namely the “Devaluation of Pleasure”, the “Pleasurable Activity Expectancies”, the “Negative Outcomes Expectancies”, and the “Attention to Pleasure”. The measure demonstrated good internal consistency and convergent validity in each sample. Moreover, both individual with schizophrenia and non-clinical participants with high social anhedonia scored higher on the BAPS than controls (Study 3), supporting construct validity. These findings provide preliminary evidence for the presence of low-pleasure beliefs in both clinical and subclinical groups and suggest that the BAPS has promising initial psychometric properties. The BAPS will be useful for exploring the cognitive component of anhedonia and provides a novel assessment for mechanism of change in psychosocial treatment studies.

Episodic future thinking for positive future events is known to evoke positive affect. We aimed to assess whether it specifically evokes anticipated and anticipatory pleasure for future events, and ...behavioral intention. As a secondary aim, we examined if this differed compared to a condition of thinking of positive past events. In two studies, participants nominated 5 upcoming positive events and 5 positive past events. They then completed guided episodic thinking of past events and guided episodic thinking of future events. After guided episodic thinking, they rated the nominated future events on detail/vividness, mental imagery, anticipated and anticipatory pleasure, and behavioral intention. In Study 1 (N = 32, M age = 37.0, SD = 19.7), increases on all variables were found relative to baseline, although expected pleasure was at trend level. There were no significant differences between future and past conditions. In Study 2 (N = 29, M age = 38.4, SD = 16.3), participants were asked to nominate future events that were not already planned, and perceived control was also assessed. Again, increases in detail/vividness, mental imagery, and anticipated and anticipatory pleasure were found, this time with stronger effects for the future condition. No change was found for perceived control or intention. In both studies, increases in detail/vividness, mental imagery, and anticipated and anticipatory pleasure were generally positively correlated with increases in behavioral intention. This study provides evidence that guided episodic thinking increases anticipated and anticipatory pleasure for positive future events. Clinical implications, particularly in depression and schizophrenia-spectrum disorders, are discussed.

Desde los años setenta del siglo pasado, el placer ha sido un elemento clave en las reivindicaciones del movimiento feminista, entendido sobre todo en relación con la sexualidad. En este artículo se ...propone tanto una reconceptualización del placer, como un análisis teórico de lo que voy a llamar prácticas feministas de placer, partiendo de un concepto amplio y complejo del mismo, y entendido como proceso en el que intervienen toda clase de fenómenos y condicionantes sociales, culturales y políticos. Asimismo, las prácticas de placer se definen como corporales, políticamente situadas en un contexto feminista, y donde el disfrute es un elemento importante, al margen o incluso confrontando los marcos capitalistas, por lo que también se da una problematización de la felicidad como sinónimo o culminación del placer. Se trata de mostrar cómo el placer puede ser un elemento de transformación social que (re)configura la práctica militante en los colectivos y acciones en las que participan las activistas feministas, como una forma de hacer política también desde —y a través de— lo placentero.

The Temporal Experience of Pleasure Scale (TEPS) is a self-report measure designed to assess anticipatory and consummatory pleasure, two facets of anhedonic predispositions. Despite its widespread ...use, the factor structure of the TEPS has yet to be tested in adolescents, who are at increased risk for psychopathology and undergoing rapid changes in reward-related processes. In response, the present study aimed to test the factor structure and measurement invariance of the TEPS across time, gender, and race/ethnicity in a diverse adolescent sample. Adolescents (N = 441; Mage = 14.98; 223 female) who identified as either Black (37%), Hispanic (37%), or White (26%), completed the TEPS at Baseline, 6-month, and 12-month follow-ups. Factor analyses were conducted to examine the factor structure of the TEPS, while configural, metric, scalar, and strict invariance were tested across time and demographics. Findings supported the two-factor structure of the TEPS, above and beyond other conceptualizations (e.g., 4-factor, bifactor), full longitudinal invariance, and partial invariance across gender and race/ethnicity. Examination of mean differences suggested no temporal, gender nor race/ethnic differences for anticipatory pleasure. For consummatory pleasure, no differences were found for gender, but results suggested higher levels over time and lower levels in Black adolescents. Our findings provide preliminary support for reliable cross-group interpretations of anticipatory and consummatory anhedonic predispositions as measured through the TEPS. Together, results provide support for the clinical utility of the TEPS for anhedonic-related psychopathology risk assessment in adolescence.
Public Significance Statement
The present study tested the factor structure and measurement invariance of the Temporal Experience of Pleasure Scale, a popular measure for assessing anhedonic predispositions, within a diverse adolescent sample. Results found evidence for a two-factor structure (anticipatory pleasure and consummatory pleasure), as well as measurement invariance across time, gender, and race/ethnicity, supporting the clinical utility of the TEPS for anhedonic-related psychopathology risk assessment in adolescence.

The Temporal Experience of Pleasure Scale (TEPS) is a multidimensional self-report measure that has been used to improve understanding of anticipation (“wanting”) and consummation (“liking”) of ...reward. The TEPS has been used to assess anhedonia in clinical depression, but its factor structure has not yet been confirmed in this population. This seems important given mixed findings on the model fit and factor structure of the TEPS in other clinical and community samples. To remedy this, the current study used confirmatory factor analysis to test models of the TEPS items across three studies: (a) in adults with major depression (n = 334), (b) in youth with major depression (n = 305), and (c) in a community sample (n = 320). In summary, the model fit of the two-factor TEPS scales was adequate in depressed and community Australian samples. Nevertheless, some items may require removal or revision based on cultural preferences for pleasurable experiences.

Objective
Sadistic pleasure presumably incorporates processes that support an authentic enjoyment of others' pain. However, antagonism confirmation theory, grounded in social‐psychological theorizing ...on identity maintenance and the notion of ego‐syntonicity, suggests that individuals higher in sadism report greater pleasure in response to others' pain because such reports are immoral responses that confirm their self‐views. This alternative conception has yet to be tested.
Method
In two preregistered experiments (total N = 968), participants completed measures of sadism, read about situations involving others' pain, and rated their pleasure. We manipulated the extent to which pleasure from others' pain could be used to signal morality or antagonism.
Results
We found that relatively sadistic people indicated greater pleasure across the studies but, like relatively non‐sadistic people, they altered their pleasure ratings to signal greater morality or less antagonism.
Conclusions
The findings fail to support antagonism confirmation theory, but they support recent perspectives on sadism that suggest that sadistic people may occasionally care about seeming moral (or not seeming antagonistic) and that sadism may be somewhat ego‐dystonic in this respect.
