U ovom radu obrađuju se ulomci oslikane žbuke i štukature iz rimskog domusa na Glavinićevom usponu, smještenog na južnoj padini antičke jezgre Pule. Otkriveni dio domusa u kojem su pronađeni ulomci ...oslikane žbuke i štukature datiran je od 1. st. pos. Kr. do 3. st. pos. Kr. Očuvani dekor pripadao je zidnoj i stropnoj površini. Nema podataka o namjeni prostora kojem su navedeni ulomci pripadali, budući da su pronađeni u sekundarnom položaju.
Predmet rada su dvije konzole od vapnenca s bikovim glavama iz Pule, nepoznatih okolnosti nalaza. Ukratko se donosi pregled građevina u istočnom i zapadnom dijelu Mediterana ukrašenih bikovim ...protomama na frizu, arhitravu, konzoli, zaglavnom kamenu ili kapitelu. Iz pregleda su vidljivi počeci primjene bikovih protoma u helenističkoj i rimskoj arhitekturi, njihova simbolička uloga, smjer širenja i vrsta građevine na kojoj se nalaze. S počecima Augustove vladavine otpočelo je razdoblje najveće popularnosti bikovih protoma na istaknutim dijelovima monumentalnih javnih građevina. Simboličko značenje bika povezano je sa službenom carskom ikonografijom. Kroz cijelo razdoblje Rimskog Carstva zadržali su se na nosivim arhitektonskim elementima usporedno prikaz prednjeg dijela tijela bika koji kleči i prikaz bikove glave te realistički i shematizirani prikaz. Bikove protome obično su se nalazile na važnom ulazu u grad ili urbanističko-arhitektonsku cjelinu unutar grada. Razmatra se kojim su građevinama u Puli mogle pripadati konzole s bikovim glavama. Trenutne arheološke spoznaje ne dopuštaju konačan odgovor, izvjesno je tek da su pripadale monumentalnoj javnoj arhitekturi ulaza ili prolaza.
Malo rimsko kazalište u Puli važan je spomenik kulture koji pokazuje status grada u vrijeme rimske vladavine. Ovaj je spomenik dugi niz godina ležao zatrpan i neprimijećen, korišten uglavnom kao ...izvor građevinskog kamena za okolne strukture. Tijekom 19. st. i dalje se nije znalo za njegovo postojanje, ali su počela prva istraživanja koja su na svjetlo dana donijela jedan od ulaza u kazalište. Otkrivanje ostataka kazališta u cjelini postupno se odvijalo tijekom 20. st., ali praćeno dokumentiranjem tipičnim za razdoblje u kojem je provedeno. Stoga danas imamo vrlo malo sačuvanih informacija o istraživanju kazališta. Isto vrijedi za zahvate rekonstrukcije koji su provedeni, a koji su mjestimično bili i tolikog opsega da su promijenili izgled spomenika u odnosu na stanje prije zahvata. Cilj članka je objediniti dostupne informacije kako bi se dobio pregled događanja koja su se do kraja 20. stoljeća vezivala uz Malo rimsko kazalište.
Three excavation areas were investigated at the east end of the village ofChalgrove in south Oxfordshire. A middle Iron Age settlement comprising a sequence of roundhouse gullies and one or more ...posthole structures of uncertain form was uncovered in the northern Area A, as well as two curvilinear enclosures closer to the Chalgrove Brook in Area B. Area C revealed a pair of converging trackways adjoined by rectilinear enclosures, which were constructed during the second half of the first century AD and passed out of use early in the second century. The principal feature in Area B was part of a rectilinear enclosure that was attributed to the late Roman period, but not enough of the enclosure was exposed within the development area to establish the character of any internal activity. Nevertheless, the feature may provide a context for the late Roman copper alloy 'Irchester BowV that had been found in 2011 by a metal detectorist at a location that was not precisely recorded but may lie within the enclosure. The date range of pottery from the enclosure would also allow it to be contemporary with the two third-century coin hoards for which Chalgrove is noted.
The initial idea for this kind of workshop on “Roman Pottery in the Near East” went back to the conference on Archaeology and Archaeometry in Parma and Pisa in 2008. We became very enthusiastic about ...the idea to initialise our own series of pottery workshops in which we would strive to connect scholars and researchers currently working on pottery from the Roman period in the Near East, mainly Syria, Lebanon, Jordan, and Israel, hoping to establish an academic network that would provide a platform for discussions for researchers of all levels that might transcend political differences. The 2014 round table in Amman focused on the large number of ceramic research projects from Transjordan and the Nabataean/Roman pottery studies from Middle and Southern Transjordan. The hottest discussion concerns established typo-chronology of Nabataean fine ware in the Petra region, an issue which is crucial for future pottery research in the Nabataean territories. The chronology is questioned by Tali-Erickson, to which Wenner provides a response. The presentation of eight papers from the round-table is dedicated to S. Thomas Parker, who supported the vision wholeheartedly and was an active participant and discussant in the workshops.
Lead pollution in Arctic ice reflects midlatitude emissions from ancient lead–silver mining and smelting. The few reported measurements have been extrapolated to infer the performance of ancient ...economies, including comparisons of economic productivity and growth during the Roman Republican and Imperial periods. These studies were based on sparse sampling and inaccurate dating, limiting understanding of trends and specific linkages. Here we show, using a precisely dated record of estimated lead emissions between 1100 BCE and 800 CE derived from subannually resolved measurements in Greenland ice and detailed atmospheric transport modeling, that annual European lead emissions closely varied with historical events, including imperial expansion, wars, and major plagues. Emissions rose coeval with Phoenician expansion, accelerated during expanded Carthaginian and Roman mining primarily in the Iberian Peninsula, and reached a maximum under the Roman Empire. Emissions fluctuated synchronously with wars and political instability particularly during the Roman Republic, and plunged coincident with two major plagues in the second and third centuries, remaining low for >500 years. Bullion in silver coinage declined in parallel, reflecting the importance of lead–silver mining in ancient economies. Our results indicate sustained economic growth during the first two centuries of the Roman Empire, terminated by the second-century Antonine plague.

The Jerash archaeological site holds great significance as one of the most prominent Roman sites in the Middle East. In our research paper, we present an assortment of marine shells discovered in the ...northern region of the Jerash archaeological site during the University of Jordan’s excavations from 2017 to 2019. We analyze the shells to determine their species. Additionally, we document the human modifications of the shells in order to reconstruct their possible use. The number of shells is small, but their value is heightened by the variety of species represented and the human modifications observed. The most frequently found shell are 12 murex (11 are Bolinus brandaris). Some shells exhibit perforations, which could be attributed to various purposes such as adornments, the production of cosmetics, or souvenirs.

A signed total double Roman dominating function (STDRDF) on {an} isolated-free graph $G=(V,E)$ is a function $f:V(G)\rightarrow\{-1,1,2,3\}$ such that (i) every vertex $v$ with $f(v)=-1$ has at least ...two neighbors assigned 2 under $f$ or one neighbor $w$ with $f(w)=3$, (ii) every vertex $v$ with $f(v)=1$ has at least one neighbor $w$ with $f(w)\geq2$ and (iii) $\sum_{u\in N(v)}f(u)\ge1$ holds for any vertex $v$. The weight of {an} STDRDF is the value $f(V(G))=\sum_{u\in V(G)}f(u).$ The signed total double Roman domination number $\gamma^t_{sdR}(G)$ is the minimum weight of {an} STDRDF on $G$. In this paper, we continue the study of the signed total double Roman domination in graphs and present some sharp bounds for this parameter.
Freed from the familial and social obligations incumbent on the
living, the Roman testator could craft his will to be a literal
"last judgment" on family, friends, and society. The Romans were
...fascinated by the contents of wills, believing the will to be a
mirror of the testator's true character and opinions. The wills
offer us a unique view of the individual Roman testator's world.
Just as classicists, ancient historians, and legal historians will
find a mine of information here, the general reader will be
fascinated by the book's lively recounting of last testaments. Who
were the testators and what were their motives? Why do family, kin,
servants, friends, and community all figure in the will, and how
are they treated? What sort of afterlife did the Romans anticipate?
By examining wills, the book sets several issues in a new light,
offering new interpretations of, or new insights into, subjects as
diverse as captatio (inheritance-seeking), the structure
of the Roman family, the manumission of slaves, public
philanthropy, the afterlife and the relation of subject to emperor.
Champlin's principal argument is that a strongly felt "duty of
testacy" informed and guided most Romans, a duty to reward or
punish all who were important to them, a duty which led them to
write their wills early in life and to revise them frequently.
The notion of anomaly encompasses a multitude of systemic, physical or psychic deviations and it can have a wide range of possible interpretations. Octave Mirbeau manages to capture all its nuances ...by presenting, in his novel Sébastien Roch, a vision of reality filled with anomalies. In our contribution, we will show the abundance of defects in the novelistic universe of Sébastien Roch, analyse their essence and then move on to the influence they have on the eponymous character. We will look at the corruption of the education system run by the clerics who denigrate the protagonist's rights in order to preserve their own power; at mental disorders caused by painful experiences as well as at psychological dysfunctions; finally at physical deformities that often reflect the character vices of those affected. Our contribution shall depict a corrupted world where the “normal” is no longer considered as such.
