The personal beliefs of teachers and the cultural traditions of society can have significant effects on the adjustment of children in changing family situations. This paper explores primary school ...teachers' perception of children coping with difficult family situations and family changes in the hybrid context of Hong Kong, where Westernization meets with Chinese culture. A qualitative case study methodology was used. Thirty one teachers of different ages, experience, and roles at school were interviewed. The finding shows that teachers were on the whole quite traditional in their perception of children in difficult family situations despite the co-existence of modern ideas of marriage with traditional family values. Implications of the study for teacher education are discussed.PUBLICATION ABSTRACT

To know smoking prevalence among schoolchildre and factors related with this habit.
A cross-sectional study. 548 school-children in their 6 th and 8 th years of primary studies at schools from an Área of Córdoba (Spain) were inerviewed. Interventions: Autoadministered questionnary.
tobacco was tried in 22% (CI95%: 18.7 - 25.8) school- children. The average age for starting with this habit was 11,6 (SD) (CI 95%: 11.4 - 11.8). 12.1% smoked regularly and 1.3% smokers every day. The tobacco consumption in children was related with age (OR = 2.96; CI95%: 1.12 - 7.82), cough medicins consumption (OR = 3.15; CI95%: 1.32 - 7.48), to have a smokers sister (OR =2.53; CI95%: 1.06 - 6.00) and best friend (OR = 4.42; CI95%: 1.85 - 10.60) and drinking bear (OR = 3.68; CI95%: 1.15 - 11.7).
The prevalence of smoking in our school-children is very close to that reported by others. Among the factors accounted with the tobacco consumption in schoolchildren, highlight the presence of this habit in the eldest sister and the best friend.

It is well-known that indoor environmental quality (IEQ) in classrooms can have an effect on school children's comfort, health and performance. Unfortunately, information about the school children's ...perception of IEQ factors in their classrooms is still insufficient. The objective of this study was to better understand school children's IEQ preferences and needs in classrooms.
Perceptions, preferences, and needs regarding the IEQ in classrooms were collected by a questionnaire from 1145 school children (9–12 years) in 21 primary schools (54 classrooms) in the Netherlands. Descriptive analysis, correlation analysis, principal component analysis and two-step cluster analysis were used to analyse the data.
Using two-step cluster analysis, this study identified six clusters (profiles) of children based on their comfort perceptions and the importance of environmental factors. Among them, four clusters of children had specific concerns related to the IEQ factors: the ‘Sound concerned cluster’, the ‘Smell and Sound concerned cluster’, the ‘Thermal and Draught concerned cluster’, and the ‘Light concerned cluster’. However, the other two clusters of children did not show a specific concern, the ‘All concerned cluster’ was concerned about all IEQ factors in the classroom, while the ‘Nothing concerned cluster’ did not show any concern.
This study allows for a better understanding of the preferences and needs of primary school children from their own perspective and provides a foundation for future studies to improve both the IEQ in classrooms and school children's comfort and health.
•Different children have different problems of IEQ in classrooms.•Effective solutions should be at the individual level.•Six clusters of children were identified using two-step cluster analysis.•School children profiles were built to understand their preferences and needs.•Children's involvement is required in figuring out effective solutions.

ABSTRACT
BACKGROUND
Although adolescents generally get less than the recommended 9 hours of sleep per night, research and effort to delay school start times have generally focused on high schools. ...This study assesses the relation between school start times and sleep in middle school students while accounting for potentially confounding demographic variables.
METHODS
Seventh and eighth grade students attending 8 late starting schools (∼8:00 am, n = 630) and 3 early starting schools (∼7:23 am, n = 343) from a diverse suburban school district completed online surveys about their sleep behaviors. Doubly robust inverse probability of treatment weighted regression estimates of the effects of later school start time on student bedtimes, sleep duration, and daytime sleepiness were generated.
RESULTS
Attending a school starting 37 minutes later was associated with an average of 17 additional minutes of sleep per weeknight, despite an average bedtime 15 minutes later. Students attending late starting schools were less sleepy than their counterparts in early starting schools, and more likely to be wide awake.
CONCLUSIONS
Later school start times were significantly associated with improved sleep outcomes for early adolescents, providing support for the movement to delay school start times for middle schools.
