As perhaps the leading symbol of Industrialization, the railway constructions changed the Victorian Britain in many different ways. Railways not only transformed the British landscape geographically, ...but they also shaped attitudes of the Victorians towards developing transportation technologies. While the Victorians appreciated and enjoyed railway transformation, they were also traumatized because of tragic railway disasters. Different facets of the issue of railway safety, including not only the safe travel of passengers but also safe working conditions of railway employees, were hot topics of discussion throughout the railway age. Himself a railway accident survivor, Charles Dickens was well aware of the weight of the issue. In the form of a Christmas ghost story, his short piece “The Signalman” (1866) directs attention to railway environments, working conditions of railway employees and their influence on the occurrence of railway accidents. This article thus intends to explore “The Signalman” in relation to such discussions regarding the railway phenomenon in the Victorian Britain. Also, it will examine how and why the story combines rational and supernatural narratives through the voices of two main figures, the title character and the narrator.
AbstractCrane operators and signalmen play an integral role in the safe and efficient operation of cranes on a construction site. Operating a crane is a complex and demanding task that requires ...careful coordination between operator and signalmen in order to avoid errors that could have dire consequences, including serious injury or loss of life. Therefore, special considerations should be taken to mitigate communication errors that could occur between the two parties. Technology can play an important role in enhancing communication, and, with recent advancements in technology, human–computer interaction has emerged as an active area of research within the field of computer vision. This paper presents a framework that integrates the YOLOv4 model (for object detection) and the long short-term memory (LSTM) model (a recurrent neural network) for dynamic hand signal classification in real time. The first step is the creation of a crane signalman dynamic hand signal data set with 18 classes. The YOLOv4 model is then customized for this application by modifying the activation function. Three modified YOLOv4 models are then integrated with the LSTM model. The modified YOLOv4 integrated with LSTM is found to achieve a maximum overall accuracy of 94.8% with an inference time of 55.1 frames per second. The model is further validated with real-time dynamic hand signal classification, achieving an accuracy of 93.5% and an inference time of 44 frames per second. The proposed models show improved quality in classification accuracy as well as in processing speed in comparison to some of the most widely used models currently in use. The proposed novel framework can be used as another layer of communication to supplement current practice and reduce communication errors between crane signalmen and crane operators.

The concern of signalman for safe, regular and settled railway traffic is a mission, which hides many traps that prevent the realization of such tasks; therefore, strict adherence to instructions, ...regulations, acts and protocols is essential in order for them to carry out the work process, which provides the users with a quality service. The signalman faces daily many situations that are unpredictable and have often negative consequences. In this paper we identify the presence of stress in the workplace of railroad signalman, the consequences arising there from factual knowledge of the aid program by the signalmen, and the opinion of experts.
Written in the aftermath of the Staplehurst rail disaster, Dickens's ghost story 'The Signalman' is often read for its uncanny insights into what would later come to be known as trauma theory. This ...paper revisits that text - in its focus on retrospection, belatedness, repetition and the disarticulation of event from consciousness - to consider the role of other, arguably less intense, but still traumatising experiences. For example, Dickens's fraught editorial relationship with Elizabeth Gaskell; specifically his decision to remove a reference to himself from Cranford that suggested his readers might suffer injury from writing that found its origins in an industrial process of steam and gear train. The 'Signalman' anachronistically unites two distinct events - Staplehurst and Gaskell's wounding characterisation - within a frame that is recursively haunted by material common to both: rail catastrophe, mortal threats to the public and private self, and fraught miscommunication.

As the tower crane accident emerged as a social issue in 2017, various government measures were prepared. Most of the measures are focused on erecting, climbing, and dismantling phases. Analyzes of ...84 serious accidents related to tower cranes from 2000 to 2018 and 104 near misses accidents from 2016 to 2018 revealed that 50% of the serious accidents occurred during the operating phase. The main occupation influencing operating phase accidents was signalman(81.6% of serious accidents), whose communication and competency were governing causes. This result was the same in 294 questionnaires to signalmen. Signal systems and education policies for tower crane signalman in Korea and foreign countries were analyzed, and standardization of wireless signal system and improvement of education system were propose.
This chapter summarises Charles Dickens's view of the ghost story. It presents some close readings of A Christmas Carol, ‘The Signalman’ and ‘A December Vision’. In A Christmas Carol, Dickens uses ...ghosts to critique the economic system and to pardon capitalism. In ‘A December Vision’, Dickens tries to represent the ghost of the industrial economy as it spreads poverty throughout the country. Finally, it shows that Dickens's fascination with the allegorical mode of the ghost story and the ways such allegories can be read are addressed in ‘The Signalman’.
