"I know both candidates. Anne M. Gobi is a colleague," he said. "I know James Ehrhard from (his service on) the Tantasqua School Committee. I've made it clear I'm not getting involved in the race. ...I'm not endorsing a candidate." "That's where part of that money goes," she said. "As soon as we say we're going to lower (fees) what do we do for those agencies?" The Senate district includes the towns of Ashburnham, Ashby, Athol, Barre, Brimfield, Brookfield, Charlton, East Brookfield, Hardwick, Holland, Hubbardston, Monson, New Braintree, North Brookfield, Oakham, Palmer, Paxton, Petersham, Phillipston, Rutland, Spencer, Sturbridge, Templeton, Wales, Ware, Warren, West Brookfield and Winchendon. It is the second largest Senate district in the state.
The long decline in the nation's cattle numbers seems to have broken the well-known cattle cycle, which produces a bigger herd when prices rise and a smaller herd after they decline. Digging deeper ...into the recent cattle inventory report, the numbers show that Steve Smola and Mike Frey may be on to something after all. From his perspective as president of Guymon-based Hitch Enterprises Inc., the state's largest cattle feeding operation, Paul Hitch said he's not convinced the cattle cycle is over.
Owner Rodney Steven II said he would rebuild on the site, where several thousand members have been able to work out 24 hours a day."It's going to be a bigger, better club," said Rich Smola, human ...resources director for Genesis Health Clubs. In the meantime, Genesis is directing members of the destroyed club to three other Genesis locations. The business is also planning for a temporary west-side site. Shortly before 6 a.m., as smoke rapidly filled the building, employees and patrons evacuated, fire Battalion Chief Don Kersting said. Although up to 40 people were inside, no one was injured, officials said. Steven and Kersting praised a fitness director for quickly calling 911, sounding the warning and matching people to vehicles in the parking lot, to try to make sure everyone escaped.
"For what we were able to accomplish the weekend of July 30, the amount of work to be done, the amount of trees to cut up, brush to chip, it's just daunting," Mr. Todd M. Smola said. "And we were ...there for just a weekend. Many of these property owners have been working day in, day out since the tornado," "The one thing that was universally evident that first weekend is that everywhere we went, people were appreciative of help in any form," Mr. Smola said. "Now we're getting into a change of seasons with fall coming on. I'd like to hope that most families will be in more of a stable situation than they are now by the time snow flies. That's why it's important when there are volunteers who want to help out, to find ways of putting their skills and talents to work in the recovery effort."

"Standing on the ground here, we might see smoke rising. It may be a half mile away, but we can't really pinpoint an exact location. The problem is multiplied if that smoke is rising from somewhere ...within the tornado swath because there's a good chance we can't even get to it," he said. Mr. Todd M. Smola said, "You've got hundreds and hundreds of acres of trees on the ground, fire roads that are completely blocked or don't exist. How do you get to the source of the fire? Beyond that, it's not like the state forest exists in a vacuum. There are surrounding communities that very quickly could be put in the path of danger," he said. "We're pooling resources, coming up with lists, getting all the appropriate agencies to the table, because this isn't just about Monson. What we're looking at is a regional approach pertinent to all those communities that were in the path of the tornado," he said.
Todd M. Smola of 126 Bourne St., in the Three Rivers section of this town, hopes to succeed his former boss, state Rep. Reed V. Hillman, R-Sturbridge. Mr. Smola, 27, a Republican, had worked for Mr. ...Hillman as chief legislative aide for three years before leaving that position earlier this year to seek the 1st Hampden District state representative seat. Mr. Hillman announced in April he would not seek re-election. A graduate of Palmer High School, Mr. Smola received an associate's degree in liberal arts from Holyoke Community College and a bachelor of science degree in geography and regional planning from Westfield State College.
She leaves a brother, Steven Smola of Springfield; two sisters, Mary M. Jarobski of Worcester, and Eleanor Lamoureux of Springfield; five grandchildren; a great-grandchild; nephews and nieces.
