Introduction Snowboarding is an activity that appears to be gaining popularity among people who are interested in winter sports. The dynamic evolution of the method of snowboarding comes with it the ...risk of injuries, the consequences of which can be catastrophic. As a result of the fact that this sporting activity is distinguished by a diverse riding technique and calls for the use of specialized equipment, the mechanism of damage is also distinct from that which is known in, for instance, skiing. In addition, comparable to skiing, snowboarding has a sub-discipline that is linked with the execution of tricks and jumps. In a disproportionate manner, this raises the probability of an accident occurring. Wrist, shoulder, and ankle joints are among the most often injured structures in the body. Trauma to the brain and spine are remarkably uncommon, nonetheless, they are the ones that have the most serious repercussions. It is imperative that special attention be made to the avoidance of these incidents, which is why both medical professionals and proprietors of ski resorts stress the need of people wearing helmets and other protective gear, such as wrist guards. It is anticipated that the implementation of these techniques will lead to a decrease in the occurrence of the most common and serious forms of injuries, as well as a reduction in the strain placed on the organization that provides medical care. Aim of the study This review aims to characterize the most common injuries acquired during snowboarding, analyze their mechanism and to show methods of prevention. Material and method This article presents the current state of knowledge on snowboarding injuries, their mechanisms and prevention in various scientific articles. Publications describing injuries that occur while snowboarding were reviewed using the PubMed platform. The search included the keywords 'snowboard', 'injuries', 'fracture', ‘trauma’.
OBJECTIVE:To characterize factors associated with helmet use and risk-taking behavior among recreational skiers and snowboarders.
DESIGN:Observational study.
SETTING:Large, western United States ...mountain resort.
PARTICIPANTS:1285 male and female recreational skiers and snowboarders were interviewed during a single winter ski season.
INDEPENDENT VARIABLES:Helmet use, demographic, and sport-related characteristics.
MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES:Brief sensation seeking scale (BSSS) as a measure of risk-taking behavior and self-reported risk compensation.
RESULTS:Of the respondents (N = 1285), 17.5%, 12.5%, and 70.0% reported that they never, sometimes, and always wore a helmet, respectively. Multiple linear regression analysis showed that individuals reporting sometimes wearing a helmet had significantly higher BSSS scores than those reporting never wearing a helmet (P = 0.031) or always wearing it (P = 0.018). Male gender, younger age, snowboarding, higher perceived sport ability, more days per year skiing or snowboarding, and more time spent in the terrain park were significantly associated with higher BSSS scores (P < 0.05). Logistic regression analysis focusing on subgroups of respondents who reported either sometimes or always wearing a helmet indicated that the odds of taking more risks when wearing a helmet for inconsistent helmet users was 75% higher than the odds for those who reported always wearing a helmet (P = 0.06).
CONCLUSIONS:Inconsistent helmet users have characteristics of risk-taking behavior and risk compensation. Male gender, younger age, snowboarding, higher perceived sport ability, and more time spent on the mountain and in the terrain park are also important determinants of risk-taking behavior.

Objectives: To investigate patients with injuries from skiing and snowboarding who were admitted to the Department of Emergency Medicine, Gunma University Hospital.Methods: We examined injured sites, ...injury severity, and the clinical course of patients who were injured while skiing and snowboarding and were admitted to our department between January 2002 and December 2018.Results: Among the 5,448 patients admitted to our department during this period, there were 23 cases (0.42%) with injuries from skiing (n=8, 35%) and snowboarding (n=15, 65%). Injury to the abdomen and pelvic organs (14 cases) was most common. The medians of the revised trauma score, injury severity score, and possibility of survival were 7.8408, 9, and 0.9942, respectively. Emergent procedures such as operation or transcatheter arterial embolization were performed in 4 cases. The median duration of hospitalization was 6.0 days and all 23 patients improved and left our hospital or transferred to other hospitals uneventfully.Conclusion: Injury from skiing and snowboarding can be severe, therefore, treatment in a suitable medical institution is required.

To determine typical speeds of skiers and snowboarders on-piste groomed trails across the United States (US).
On-slope speeds of skiers and snowboarders were measured on trails of varying difficulty ...at 8 ski areas across the US. The trail difficulty designation and slope were documented for each location where speed measurements were taken. The equipment used (skis or snowboard), whether a helmet was worn, and the estimated ability (determined by the researchers) of snowsports participants were recorded. A multiple linear regression analysis was performed to determine the influence of these individual and environmental factors on the speeds of snowsports participants.
4164 speed observations were made between 2004 and 2020 on groomed trails at 8 ski areas representing 5 geographic regions in the United States. Across all observations, the average speed was 34.9 ± 13.6 km/h. The ability of the snowsports participant had the largest effect on speed. Advanced snowsports participants traveled faster (44.5 ± 11.7 km/h) than intermediates (32.4 ± 9.9) and beginners (19.9 ± 7.2). Skiers on average were faster (35.8 ± 13.8 km/h) than snowboarders (33.0 ± 13.2 km/h) and beginner and intermediate snowboarders were slower on average than their skiing counterparts. While the average speeds increased with increasing trail difficulty and slope, the correlation was weak (R2 = 0.15).
The ability of the snowsports participant was found to be the most influential factor affecting speed.

The incidence of paediatric fractures among winter sport athletes is not adequately studied. Our objective was to categorize fractures that occurred in paediatric skiers and snowboarders at a single ...ski resort. X-rays of 756 skiers/snowboarders aged 3-17 diagnosed with a fracture were categorized using the Salter-Harris (SH) classification. SH fractures were seen in 158 (21%) patients, with 123 (77%) being Type II. There were no significant differences between patients with a SH fracture and patients with a non-SH fracture for age, sex, snowboarding or skiing, mechanism of injury, terrain or the resort conditions on the day of injury. The most common mechanism of injury was falling onto snow while collisions resulted in more severe injuries. Compared to fractures without growth plate involvement, a higher proportion of SH fractures were seen in the humerus, radius, fibula and thumb; a lower proportion of SH fractures were observed at the tibia and clavicle.

Participation in skiing and snowboarding continues to increase. Both sports are associated with unique equipment and movement patterns, placing athletes at risk for several characteristic injuries. ...Although the axial skeleton and extremities are at risk for injury in both sports, skiing and snowboarding are associated with distinctive injury patterns. This article summarizes the epidemiology, risk factors, and specific injuries associated with skiing and snowboarding to better educate orthopedic surgeons regarding diagnosis and treatment of athletes partaking in these sports.
Skiing and snowboarding are popular winter sports. The purpose of this study was to determine differences in injury patterns and severity between children participating in these sports treated at ...trauma centers in the United States.
Ski and snowboard injuries in children <15 identified from the 2011–2015 National Trauma Data Bank were compared using t tests, chi squared tests, and multivariable analyses. Time trends were evaluated using the Cochran Armitage trend test.
We identified 1613 injured snowboarders and 1655 skiers. Snowboarders were older (12 vs. 11years, p<.001) and more likely to be male (84 vs. 68%, p<.001). The proportion of ski to snowboard injuries increased over time (p<.001). Skiers had greater median ISS than snowboarders (5 vs. 4, p<.001) but similar severe injuries ISS ≥16 (9 vs. 8%, p=.31). Head injuries were more frequent among snowboarders (26 vs. 23%, p=.013). Helmet use was greater in skiers (46 vs. 34%, p<.001). Skiers were more likely to sustain face, chest, and lower extremity injuries. Snowboarders had more abdominal and upper extremity injuries (p<.05). Snowboarders were more likely to undergo CT (20 vs. 16%, p=.008), and skiers were more likely to undergo surgery (25 vs. 22% p=.021). Need for intensive care (12 vs. 13%, p=.43) and mortality (0.3 vs. 0.3%, p=.75) were similar. Median length of stay was greater for skiers (2 days vs. 1day, p<.001).
Many children are treated at United States trauma centers for ski and snowboard injuries. One in 10 is severely injured. Different injury patterns between sports can be used to tailor prevention efforts. However, avoiding head injury and improving helmet use should be a priority for all children on the slopes.
