The picture storybooks have gone through a major transformation since their modern versions appeared in the 1950s
. Modern and postmodern picture story books “have a great potential with their ...flexibility, based on a great variety of picture-text interplay, a wide range of themes, richness of aims and functions” (
, p. 88-89). In the online distance learning course, education will be carried out on the basis of interaction between the learner and material (stored and exchanged in Moodle Platform, for instance), and between other participants in the educational process, that is, the instructor and other learners. The advantage of teaching children’s literature, especially picture story books, via E-learning platforms, is twofold: firstly, readers take their time to go through the reading materials and work on their own; secondly, it gives them space and time to prepare for the task assigned by the instructor appropriately and effectively by paying close attention to all the details, which, due to shortage of time allocated in face-to-face education (classroom environment) would be impossible. This paper presents not only advantages of such learning, but also sample tasks learners may encounter while participating in the online distance learning.
Background: Elementary school education is the basic level education where students were forged with many kind of study subject where each subject has to be mastered by the students. On the other ...hand students were also educated with attitude and behavior values that will be the basis for further developments in the future. One of the important attitude and behavior that needs to be educated early is environmental hygiene concern. Story book is a proper medium for attitude and behavior educaton for children, since they can accommodate children reading capacity and interest. Story books are usually written with short sentence, also simpler vocabulary and grammar compared to adult reading which makes them very effective in affecting the soul of the children.
Objectives: To reveal the influence of story book with hygiene environmental schools hygiene concern theme towards attitudes and behavior of hygiene environmental schools hygiene concern on students of elementary schools in the District Gamping, Sleman Special Region of Yogyakarta.
Method : Quasi-experimental "Pre test Post test with Control Design" Research Design. The research sampling was purposive sampling. Story books with environmental hygiene concern theme was given by reading together with the respondents and the researchers then followed by an explanation, while the control group didn’t exposed with the story books. Pre test and post test were used to determine the attitudes and behavior of hygiene environmental school concern before and after given the story book. Hypothesis testing using SPSS for Windows with T-test method with a significance level of p <0.05.
Results: The attitude analysis result of the experimental and control groups with Independent sample t-tests obtained sig. (2-tailed) of 0.000 <0.05, which means story book gives significant influence on student’s attitude related to environmental hygiene concern.
While behavior analysis result of the experimental and control groups with independent sample t-test obtained sig. (2-tailed) of 0,343 > 0,05, which means story book gives no significant influence on student’s behavior related to environmental hygiene concern.
Conclusion: There is a correlation of using storybooks with environmental school hygiene concern themes towards the environmental school hygiene concern attitude and while no observed correlation towards the environmental school hygiene concern behavior.
Parents engage in joint story book sharing where adults read an appropriate text to children, usually in the home environment. Story book sharing promotes the young children's development of ...receptive and expressive language abilities as well as their emerging early literacy abilities, which have an effect on the childrens success in school-based literacy instruction. This review describes and analyses studies that have examined the parents and children's involvement in shared storybook reading. It specifically focuses on the parents teaching behaviours and storybook reading interactions during formal and informal literacy experiences including the quality of their interactions, interactions in dialogic reading, and extratextual interactions. The review also discusses studies on the value and effect of using different story book genres in particular narrative and informational texts (such as science texts as information books). These studies support that storybook reading promotes childrens language growth, emergent literacy, and reading achievement.

A synthesis and meta-analysis of the extant research on the effects of storybook read-aloud interventions for children at risk for reading difficulties ages 3 to 8 is provided. A total of 29 studies ...met criteria for the synthesis, with 18 studies providing sufficient data for inclusion in the meta-analysis. Read-aloud instruction has been examined using dialogic reading; repeated reading of stories; story reading with limited questioning before, during, and/or after reading; computer-assisted story reading; and story reading with extended vocabulary activities. Significant, positive effects on children’s language, phonological awareness, print concepts, comprehension, and vocabulary outcomes were found. Despite the positive effects for read-aloud interventions, only a small amount of outcome variance was accounted for by intervention type.

Educators and researchers consider vocabulary development foundational in young children’s language and literacy learning and for academic achievement; adult-child shared book reading is potentially ...a rich site for word learning and concept development. In this article, we report on how an immigrant father and his four year old daughter, English Language Learners living in a community identified as “vulnerable”, attended to words and their meanings in two shared reading sessions. Results indicate the father enacted a number of strategies including: verbal explanations; providing verbal explanations and pointing to the relevant illustration; referencing the child’s previous experiences; and using demonstration and gesture. The findings challenge some of the assumptions about immigrant families and families living in “vulnerable” communities, as well as the role of fathers in young children’s language and literacy development.

Objective: A single-blinded, parallel-groups (intervention, active and passive control groups) randomized controlled trial (RCT) was chosen to investigate whether a specific reminiscence program is ...associated with higher levels of quality of life in nursing home residents with dementia. Methods: The intervention used a life-story approach, while the control groups participated in casual discussions. The Social Engagement Scale (SES) and Self Reported Quality of Life Scale (SRQoL) were used as the outcome measures, which were examined at baseline (T0), 12 weeks (T1), and six months (T2) after the intervention. The final sample had 135 subjects (active control group = 45; passive control group = 45; intervention group = 45). Results: The Wilcoxon test showed significant differences in the intervention group between T2 and T0, and between T1 and T0 in the SES, and there were significant differences between T0 and T1 (intervention effect size = 0.267) and T1 and T2 (intervention effect size = 0.450) in the SRQoL. The univariate logistic regression scores showed that predictors of change in the SRQoL were associated with fewer baseline anxiety symptoms and lower depression scores. Conclusions: The intervention led to significant differences between the three groups over time, showing a significant improvement in the quality of life and engagement of the residents in the intervention group.

The aim of the SAGA project is to support children’s social-emotional development and teacher mentalizing by promoting regular shared story-book reading with mentalizing dialogs in early childhood ...education and care (ECEC) centers. The theoretical phase, the modeling phase (Phase I), and the exploratory phase (Phase II) of the SAGA intervention, as well as the research protocol for the final trial (Phase III), are described in the present article.
We investigated the efficacy of reminiscence therapy (RT)
on symptoms of depression in patients with mild to moderate dementia. Out of 227
patients with mild to moderate dementia from a specialized ...physician's
office, 27 pairs (N = 54; mean age 79.04 ± 6.16 years) who
had either received treatment as usual (TAU) or TAU combined with RT, were
matched retrospectively according to age as well as cognitive and depressive
symptom scores. After controlling for age and sex, symptoms of depression
significantly decreased over time in the RT group compared to TAU
(F1,52 = 4.36; p < .05). RT
is a promising option for the treatment of depression in mild to moderate
dementia. Larger randomized-controlled trials are needed.

Methods: Using a quasiexperimental design, this study assigned 60older adults who were between 50-90years old with mild-to-moderate levels of ID to receive either the LSWp (intervention group, N=32) or usual activities (control group, N=28) during a period of 6months. Evaluation was made based on the outcomes assessed by the Mood Interest and Pleasure Questionnaire, the Vineland Adaptive Behavior Scales, and the Personal Well-being Index - ID. Results and conclusion: LSWp shows potential for improving the quality of life and preventing the loss of interest and pleasure in older adults with ID. It also shows promise in enhancing their socialization skills. Patients with better communication abilities seemed to benefit more from the LSWp.
