Metal cutting is an essential process throughout engineering design and manufacturing industries. To increase efficiency and reduce costs, it is necessary to improve understanding of the metal ...cutting process. This book presents a comprehensive treatment of the subject that focuses on the features of the behavior of tool and work materials that influence the efficiency of metal cutting operations. The Fourth Edition of this acclaimed book has been expanded and revised to include significant changes and additions to metal cutting theory, and to cover developments in tool materials and industrial practice. In particular, improvements in the understanding of the generation of heat and distribution of temperature in the cutting tool are described; a discussion of the structure, properties, and performance of newly developed ceramic tool materials and tool coatings is presented; new information of the machinability of alloys is given; and the introduction of calcium deoxidized steels and their improved machinability are assessed. Additionally, a material selection and design-based approach is expanded upon to improve industrial relevance.Metal Cutting provides invaluable information for those engaged in machining, toolmaking, and related engineering activities, and it serves as a useful introduction to the subject for students of metallurgy and engineering.
We present an application of strategy synthesis to enforce spatial properties. This is achieved by implementing a toolchain that enables the tools CATLib and VoxLogicA to interact in a fully ...automated way. The Contract Automata Library (CATLib) is aimed at both composition and strategy synthesis of games modelled in a dialect of finite state automata. The Voxel-based Logical Analyser (VoxLogicA) is a spatial model checker for the verification of properties expressed using the Spatial Logic of Closure Spaces on pixels of digital images. We provide examples of strategy synthesis on automata encoding motion of agents in spaces represented by images, as well as a proof-of-concept realistic example based on a case study from the railway domain. The strategies are synthesised with CATLib, while the properties to enforce are defined by means of spatial model checking of the images with VoxLogicA. The combination of spatial model checking with strategy synthesis provides a toolchain for checking and enforcing mobility properties in multi-agent systems in which location plays an important role, like in many collective adaptive systems. We discuss the toolchain’s performance also considering several recent improvements.

Special-purpose multi-axis CNC machines are used for the face-milling of hypoid gears. These machines are equipped with specially design cutter-head, consisting of inside and outside blades, to ...machine the convex and concave sides of the gear teeth. In this research, CAD model of a face-milling cutter-head is developed, in which side cutting edges of inside and outside blades of the cutter system are built on the rake face. Since the side cutting edges are not on the axial plane of the cutter, the sweep surface formed by the cutting edges are hyperboloids, rather than the cylindrical surfaces as assumed in the other researches. Due to the hyperboloid sweep surfaces of the cutter, the gear teeth formed by the face-milling have not only curvature along the length of the teeth but also have curvature along the flank-wise direction. It leads towards the result that the blade angles are not equal to the flank angles of the gear teeth at the mean point. Therefore, a CAD-based cutter geometry determination model is built, to calculate the geometry parameter of the cutter-head, such as blade angles and the average cutter radius, for the given parameters of the gear teeth at the mean point.

This paper presents the results of ongoing research aimed at developing an integrated computer-aided tolerancing tool. A unified Jacobian-Torsor approach has been developed for deterministic (worst ...case) computer-aided tolerancing. The paper describes how one can use the same set of interval-based deterministic equations in a statistical context. The nature of the resulting equations lends itself to very fast computations to determine the percentage of rejected assemblies produced given some statistical distribution of the tolerances of their constituent parts. An example application is also presented to illustrate the use of the developed tool.

This paper deals with the problems of industrial products quality in Russia, its control and maintenance. Our analysis of the identified issues is industry-specific: we study how products quality is ...assured in machine-tool and radio electronics equipment manufacture; some specific features of these processes in defence industry are identified and described. We define the areas where quality management systems can be improved and further developed at machine-tool manufacture plants. We also suggest certain concrete recommendations for developing highly competitive companies that produce radio electronic devices. We propose a system of quality maintenance for defense enterprises.DOI: https://doi.org/10.24052/JBRMR/V12IS01/TPOEIPQIR
Machine tools are called mother machine in the meaning of the machine for producing various machines. Demands for nanometer scale machining accuracy of large and hard-to-cut materials have increased ...in a wide range of industries. Actual research and development activities on innovative mother machines have been recently performed in industries and academia over the world. In order to meet such extreme industrial requirements, however, it is necessary and indispensable to establish and systematize the machine tool engineering. This paper presents (1) definition of machine tool engineering and general design flow of machine tools, (2) characteristic features and systematization of machine tool engineering, (3) engineering problems to be solved and their classifications, and (4) future evolution trends of machine tool engineering and mother machine.
The demand for machine tools with accuracy on a nanometer scale has been increasing in a wide range of industries. Machine tools have been called “mother machines” in that they produce various other ...devices. In order to meet the requirements of industry, numerous research activities have been conducted to develop various technologies related to machine tools. However, there are only few established technologies in spite of the machine tool industry’s long history. A new approach to systematizing machine tool engineering is playing an increasingly important role in the development of innovative machine tools. This paper presents a conceptual framework for systematizing machine tool engineering. Future evolutionary trends in machine tool engineering are also described.
In many mechanical operations, vibrations from personal tools may cause serious injuries to the human body. This is particularly true in the case of vibrations that are constantly and repeatedly ...transferred to humans. In fact, a serious physical problem, Raynaud’s phenomenon, may occur. In this paper, we propose a vibration transmissibility reduction module with a flexure mechanism for personal tools. First, a target personal tool, that is, a grass cutter is selected, and the level of vibration transmissibility to the hand is measured. Subsequently, we develop a concept design of the module with stiffness to reduce the vibration transmissibility by more than 20%. The vibration transmissibility is measured by an accelerometer. In addition, the vibration reduction is enhanced when the gap between the inner and outer bodies is filled with silicone gel. Finally, this is verified experimentally.

A virtual tool (electronic book) for antenna theory and electromagnetic propagation is presented. A variety of radiation and electromagnetic problems ranging from linear antennas to arrays, radiation ...in time domain, microstrip antennas, smart antennas, and reflectors can be simulated. The material is useful both at undergraduate and graduate engineering courses. The education tool uses a user-friendly interface thanks to Mathcad reg software package which has been used to develop the electronic book. Moreover, navigation throughout the book follows the same rules used by internet users, therefore, no extra knowledge have to be introduced on how to use the present tool. Besides the user-friendly interface, the book also features visualization capabilities, 3D representations and videos, which play a significant role in teaching. The electronic book comes with several exercise sections having twofold objectives: first, students can check their own progress, and second, data from such exercises is provided to professor/mentor. This data is extremely useful to determine whether a given section can be considered completely understood or some extra emphasize needs to be done. All the material presented in the book can be complemented by extra peer review scientific papers given at the end of each section, most of them can be downloaded (obviously, depending on the contract between university and editorial). The book has been tested using objective data resulting in good acceptance.
