The goal of this paper is to discern whether environmental policy stringency discourages inbound tourism in the G7 countries. The analysis is based on second-generation panel data methods in consort ...with the panel quantile regression approach. The findings document that environmental policy stringency plunges inbound tourism across all quantiles. Moreover, the impact of environmental policy stringency is relatively strong at higher quantiles compared to middle and lower quantiles, while the analysis reports that per capita global GDP escalates inbound tourism at all quantiles, whereas both inflation and the real effective exchange rate plunge inbound tourism. Finally, this study proposes certain policy recommendations to promote tourism. The results also survive certain robustness tests. They also imply that the countries under consideration need to adopt special measures to promote tourism, apply strict environmental control measures, while tourists should be given incentives to offset the detrimental impact of environmental regulations. Finally, the tourism-related firms should be given higher emissions permits through an emissions trading scheme, which lowers the cost of tourism, as well as tax exemptions on their imports

Weather conditions are important determinants of tourism demand. After reviewing the main contributions of previous research on the role of climatic variables in tourism demand functions, we explore ...different modelling alternatives to introduce temperature and rainfall in a gravity model. The dataset used comprises interregional tourism flows by Spanish residents from 2011 to 2015. We first estimate a benchmark model with both temperature and rainfall at the destination expressed in levels, and then consider some extensions to this model. In particular, special attention is paid to analyzing whether the sensitivity that tourists may have to weather factors can change across seasons. Other modelling issues examined include the relationship between climatic variables at the destination and at home, the influence of weather in previous periods (lagged values of temperature and rain), the variability of the weather variables (captured by the standard deviation of these variables), or whether the effect of temperature varies with the climatic characteristics of the region. Our empirical results confirm that spring and summer tourism in Spain is more sensitive to weather conditions, that the number of domestic overnight stays in Spain is strongly influenced by changes in the difference in temperature between tourists' home and destination regions, that the estimated parameters of lagged weather variables are higher than those corresponding to the travelling months, that temperature variability in the destination region reduces tourism demand, and that the effect of temperature on destination choice for residents in moderate-climate regions is lower than for residents in other types of regions.

This research investigates the optimum spatial scale of regional tourism cooperation based on the tourism flows spillover in Mainland China. Using panel data from 341 prefecture-level cities in ...Mainland China, spatial econometric modeling is employed to estimate the spillover effects to determine the optimum spatial scale of regional tourism cooperation. The findings reveal that there are spatial correlations of tourism flow. In addition, tourism economic fundamental factor, surrounding market factor, tourism transportation facility factor, and tourist attraction factors have a positive and significant impact not only on local tourism flows but also on the surrounding areas. Finally, it is found that the optimum spatial scale of the regional tourism cooperation in Mainland China is 5, 15 cities, whereas for the eastern, western, southern, and northern regions, the optimum scale of the regional tourism cooperation is 5, 21, 5, 26, 5, 26, and 5, 11 cities, respectively.

The article provides a comparative analysis of trends in domestic and foreign tourism in Ukraine and Poland during the COVID-19 pandemic. The main directions and tools of marketing policy of ...balancing tourist flows for socio-economic development of the researched countries are analyzed. The main subject of the research is marketing tools for balancing international tourist flows in the investigated countries, taking into account the experience of other countries in which the field of tourism is developed. The research methodology provides for the analysis of the dynamics of tourist flows in Poland and Ukraine, the use of methods and tools of fuzzy logic using Mathlab software and the use of a matrix method of analysis to study the development of tourism at the regional level. The study used data from the World Bank, the International Monetary Fund in post-socialist countries, as well as the results of the Global Market Research-2020 and data from statistical agencies of Ukraine and Poland. It is emphasized that formation of an effective marketing policy to balance the flow of international tourism at the local level should be with the participation of the private sector and local governments. The purpose of the article: outline marketing tools for balancing international tourism flows in Ukraine and Poland, especially during the Covid-19 pandemic. Conclusions. In summary, the study identified such generalized tools of modern marketing that are most relevant in the development of policies to balance tourist flows in Ukraine and Poland, as well as in other countries, especially in the pandemic Covid-19: creating content for electronic networks (content), social media marketing (SMM), landing page or standard website, search engine optimization (SEO), media advertising, teaser advertising, consumer product support, e-mails (emails), viral marketing, strategic partnership, CPA-marketing, creation of a marketing channel, application of a comprehensive strategy of smart-tourism.
As the demand for environmentally sustainable tourism grows, eco-labels are becoming increasingly popular as a signal of environmental quality. However, the existence of a causal link between ...awarding a seaside eco-label and the increase in tourism flows is still under discussion in the literature. In this article, we gauge the signalling impact of a specific eco-label, the Blue Flag award, using detailed data on tourism flows to seaside Italian destinations during the period 2008-2012. We adopt a recent econometric modelling strategy - the synthetic control method - in shaping estimation results and testing the sensitivity and robustness of our results. We find that being awarded the Blue Flag increases the flow of domestic tourists for up to three seasons after assignment. However, we find no effect for the flow of international tourists. Investigating the mechanisms driving the results, we find that the award of a Blue Flag only positively affects the flow of domestic tourists when it is used as a driver of organisation, coordination and integrated management of the tourism supply.

The paper analyses the impact of domestic and international tourism on the economic growth process for 179 European regions. The econometric analysis is based on a spatial growth regression framework ...where the rate of GDP per capita growth at the regional level for the period 1999–2009 depends on tourism flows, in addition to the traditional growth variables. Besides controlling for initial conditions, we also include a wide set of covariates to account for the endowment of human and technological capital and for the geographical, social and institutional features of the regions. The results, confirmed by several robustness checks, demonstrate that regional growth is positively affected by domestic and international tourism.

Este artículo analiza el impacto del turismo nacional e internacional en el proceso de crecimiento económico para 179 regiones europeas. El análisis econométrico se basa en un marco de regresión de crecimiento espacial en el que la tasa del PIB per cápita de crecimiento a nivel regional entre 1999 y 2009 depende de flujos turísticos, además de las variables de crecimiento tradicionales. Además del control de las condiciones iniciales, también incluimos un amplio conjunto de covariables con las que tener en cuenta la dotación de capital humano y tecnológico y las características geográficas, sociales e institucionales de las regiones. Los resultados, confirmados por varias pruebas de robustez, demuestran que el crecimiento regional se ve afectado positivamente por el turismo nacional e internacional.

Panel co-integration and panel ...Granger causality techniques are applied to analyse both long- and short-run relationships for the case study of selected OECD countries. Our empirical results show the existence of the long-run and a bi-directional causal relationship between FDIRE and TOUR. The results provide some implications for policy-makers.

Until recently, the tourism sector accounted for a significant share of the world's gross domestic product and provided about 10 % of world employment. In 2020, the global tourism industry faced a ...serious challenge – a crisis caused by the spread of a new type of virus (COVID-19 pandemic). International tourism has become one of the most affected by COVID-19 pandemic industries. The demand for tourism and hospitality services, which were one of the world's largest sources of foreign exchange earnings and employment in the era of pre-COVID-19, has significantly decreased. Although the future of tourism in an era of COVID-19 pandemic is very uncertain, a study of trends in the international tourism market in a crisis can be used to assess how the industry can recover and survive in the era of COVID-19 pandemic. Based on the statistical data of international organizations, the author studied indicators of international tourist flows, identified the main trends in the development of international tourism at the current stage, assessed the impact on the tourism sector of the COVID-19 pandemic and determined possibilities for its development in the context of the economic crisis, showed prospects for the development of the industry.
This study aims to investigate the relationship between international tourism and total trade, including exports and imports, for the twenty most visited countries. In order to accurately assess the ...relationship, the study employs the Emirmahmutoglu and Kose (2011) causality analysis, which accounts for cross-sectional dependency and heterogeneity. The empirical results show a unidirectional causality running from total trade, exports, and imports to international tourist arrivals for Germany, India, Mexico, and the Netherlands. Conversely, the causality runs from international tourist arrivals to total trade, exports, and imports for Portugal, Russia, and Spain (except imports). Additionally, a bidirectional causality link between international trade and tourism is found for China, indicating that both tourism and trade mutually reinforce each other. These results highlight the importance of considering the direction of causality in the relationship between tourism and trade, and developing targeted policies that take into account the unique characteristics of each country.
From the late 1990s, the European air transport deregulation has led to the increasing use of the plane to reach tourist destinations. This article investigates the impact of tourists’ changed ...traveling habits on Italy’s seasonal tourism demand pattern. The role of transportation on seasonality, indeed, has been almost neglected in empirical research. We analyze international monthly arrivals by transport modes from 1997 to 2018, and we use the Gini index as a measure of seasonality. The Gini’s decomposition allows us to evaluate the effects of the growth in the use of each transport mode (cars, planes, ships, trains) on seasonality. A beta regression model confirms that an increment in the proportion of tourist arrivals by airplane determines a reduction in Italy’s overall seasonality of international tourism demand. These results might be a starting point for policy makers in developing strategies to counteract seasonality.
