The rapid growth in the number of vehicles has led to traffic congestion, pollution, and delays in logistic transportation in metropolitan areas. IoT has been an emerging innovation, moving the ...universe towards automated processes and intelligent management systems. This is a critical contribution to automation and smart civilizations. Effective and reliable congestion management and traffic control help save many precious resources. An IoT-based ITM system set of sensors is embedded in automatic vehicles and intelligent devices to recognize, obtain, and transmit data. Machine learning (ML) is another technique to improve the transport system. The existing transport-management solutions encounter several challenges resulting in traffic congestion, delay, and a high fatality rate. This research work presents the design and implementation of an Adaptive Traffic-management system (ATM) based on ML and IoT. The design of the proposed system is based on three essential entities: vehicle, infrastructure, and events. The design utilizes various scenarios to cover all the possible issues of the transport system. The proposed ATM system also utilizes the machine-learning-based DBSCAN clustering method to detect any accidental anomaly. The proposed ATM model constantly updates traffic signal schedules depending on traffic volume and estimated movements from nearby crossings. It significantly lowers traveling time by gradually moving automobiles across green signals and decreases traffic congestion by generating a better transition. The experiment outcomes reveal that the proposed ATM system significantly outperformed the conventional traffic-management strategy and will be a frontrunner for transportation planning in smart-city-based transport systems. The proposed ATM solution minimizes vehicle waiting times and congestion, reduces road accidents, and improves the overall journey experience.

We address the controversial issue of traffic flow modeling, whether first-order, second-order, or other traffic models are best supported by empirical facts and theoretical considerations. This is ...done by a critical discussion of the pros and cons of the different theoretical approaches and by the analysis of a large set of empirical data with new evaluation techniques. Specifically, we investigate characteristic properties of the congested traffic states on a 30-km-long stretch of the German freeway A5 near Frankfurt/Main. Among the approximately 245 breakdowns of traffic flow at several different bottlenecks in 165 days, we have identified five different kinds of spatiotemporal congestion patterns and their combinations. Based on an "adaptive smoothing method" for the visualization of detector data, we also discuss particular features of breakdowns, such as signs of unstable traffic flow and the "boomerang effect," which often seems to be caused by overtaking maneuvers of trucks. Controversial issues such as "synchronized flow" or stop-and-go waves are addressed as well. Our empirical results are compared with the implications of different theoretical concepts such as first-order traffic models and the phase diagram of congested traffic states predicted by some second-order models and the nonlocal, gas-kinetic based traffic model (GKT model). For a correct understanding of empirical observations such as the "general pattern," it is important to consider particularities such as the fact that off-ramps can act as bottlenecks, when activated by downstream on-ramp bottlenecks. As sequences of off- and on-ramps generate different congestion patterns than single on-ramps, they must be treated as interconnected bottlenecks. Furthermore, our empirical results question Kerner's three-phase theory.

A variety of applications can benefit from the virtual ...traffic, including, but not limited to, video games, virtual reality, traffic engineering and autonomous driving. In this survey, we provide a comprehensive review on the state‐of‐the‐art techniques for traffic simulation and animation. We start with a discussion on three classes of traffic simulation models applied at different levels of detail. Then, we introduce various data‐driven animation techniques, including existing data collection methods, and the validation and evaluation of simulated traffic flows. Next, we discuss how traffic simulations can benefit the training and testing of autonomous vehicles. Finally, we discuss the current states of traffic simulation and animation and suggest future research directions.

As traffic congestion in cities becomes serious, intelligent traffic signal control has been actively studied. Deep Q-Network (DQN), a representative deep reinforcement learning algorithm, is applied ...to various domains from fully-observable game environment to traffic signal control. Due to the effective performance of DQN, deep reinforcement learning has improved speeds and various DQN extensions have been introduced. However, most traffic signal control researches were performed at a single intersection, and because of the use of virtual simulators, there are limitations that do not take into account variables that affect actual traffic conditions. In this paper, we propose a cooperative traffic signal control with traffic flow prediction (TFP-CTSC) for a multi-intersection. A traffic flow prediction model predicts future traffic state and considers the variables that affect actual traffic conditions. In addition, for cooperative traffic signal control in multi-intersection, each intersection is modeled as an agent, and each agent is trained to take best action by receiving traffic states from the road environment. To deal with multi-intersection efficiently, agents share their traffic information with other adjacent intersections. In the experiment, TFP-CTSC is compared with existing traffic signal control algorithms in a 4 × 4 intersection environment. We verify our traffic flow prediction and cooperative method.

Compared to existing human-driven vehicles (HDVs), connected and autonomous vehicles (CAVs) offer users the potential for reduced value of time, enhanced quality of travel experience, and seamless ...situational awareness and connectivity. Hence, CAV users can differ in their route choice behavior compared to HDV users, leading to mixed traffic flows that can significantly deviate from the single-class HDV traffic pattern. However, due to the lack of quantitative models, there is limited knowledge on the evolution of mixed traffic flows in a traffic network. To partly bridge this gap, this study proposes a multiclass traffic assignment model, where HDV users and CAV users follow different route choice principles, characterized by the cross-nested logit (CNL) model and user equilibrium (UE) model, respectively. The CNL model captures HDV users' uncertainty associated with limited knowledge of traffic conditions while overcoming the route overlap issue of logit-based stochastic user equilibrium. The UE model characterizes the CAV's capability for acquiring accurate information on traffic conditions. In addition, the multiclass model can capture the characteristics of mixed traffic flow such as the difference in value of time between HDVs and CAVs and the asymmetry in their driving interactions, thereby enhancing behavioral realism in the modeling. The study develops a new solution algorithm labeled RSRS-MSRA, in which a route-swapping based strategy is embedded with a self-regulated step size choice technique, to solve the proposed model efficiently. Sensitivity analysis of the proposed model is performed to gain insights into the effects of perturbations on the mixed traffic equilibrium, which facilitates the estimation of equilibrium traffic flow and identification of critical elements under expected or unexpected events. The study results can assist transportation decision-makers to design effective planning and operational strategies to leverage the advantages of CAVs and manage traffic congestion under mixed traffic flows.

Vehicular traffic is endlessly increasing everywhere in the world and can cause terrible traffic congestion at intersections. Most of the traffic lights today feature a fixed green light sequence, ...therefore the green light sequence is determined without taking the presence of the emergency vehicles into account. Therefore, emergency vehicles such as ambulances, police cars, fire engines, etc. stuck in a traffic jam and delayed in reaching their destination can lead to loss of property and valuable lives. This paper presents an approach to schedule emergency vehicles in traffic. The approach combines the measurement of the distance between the emergency vehicle and an intersection using visual sensing methods, vehicle counting and time sensitive alert transmission within the sensor network. The distance between the emergency vehicle and the intersection is calculated for comparison using Euclidean distance, Manhattan distance and Canberra distance techniques. The experimental results have shown that the Euclidean distance outperforms other distance measurement techniques. Along with visual sensing techniques to collect emergency vehicle information, it is very important to have a Medium Access Control (MAC) protocol to deliver the emergency vehicle information to the Traffic Management Center (TMC) with less delay. Then only the emergency vehicle is quickly served and can reach the destination in time. In this paper, we have also investigated the MAC layer in WSNs to prioritize the emergency vehicle data and to reduce the transmission delay for emergency messages. We have modified the medium access procedure used in standard IEEE 802.11p with PE-MAC protocol, which is a new back off selection and contention window adjustment scheme to achieve low broadcast delay for emergency messages. A VANET model for the UTMS is developed and simulated in NS-2. The performance of the standard IEEE 802.11p and the proposed PE-MAC is analysed in detail. The NS-2 simulation results have shown that the PE-MAC outperforms the IEEE 802.11p in terms of average end-to-end delay, throughput and energy consumption. The performance evaluation results have proven that the proposed PE-MAC prioritizes the emergency vehicle data and delivers the emergency messages to the TMC with less delay compared to the IEEE 802.11p. The transmission delay of the proposed PE-MAC is also compared with the standard IEEE 802.15.4, and Enhanced Back-off Selection scheme for IEEE 802.15.4 protocol EBSS, an existing protocol to ensure fast transmission of the detected events on the road towards the TMC and the comparative results have proven the effectiveness of the PE-MAC over them. Furthermore, this research work will provide an insight into the design of an intelligent urban traffic management system for the effective management of emergency vehicles and will help to save lives and property.

Traffic congestion in urban networks may lead to strong degradation in the utilization of the network infrastructure, which can be mitigated via suitable control strategies. This paper studies and ...analyzes the performance of an adaptive traffic-responsive strategy that controls the traffic light parameters in an urban network to reduce traffic congestion. A nearly optimal control formulation is adopted to avoid the curse of dimensionality occurring in the solution of the corresponding Hamilton–Jacobi–Bellman (HJB) optimal control problem. First, an (approximate) solution of the HJB is parametrized via an appropriate Lyapunov function; then, the solution is updated at each iteration in such a way to approach the nearly optimal solution, using a close-to-optimality index and information coming from the simulation model of the network (simulation-based design). Simulation results obtained using a traffic simulation model of the network Chania, Greece, an urban traffic network containing many varieties of junction staging, demonstrate the efficiency of the proposed approach, as compared with alternative traffic strategies based on a simplified linear model of the traffic network. It is shown that the proposed strategy can adapt to different traffic conditions and that low-complexity parametrizations of the optimal solution, a linear and a bimodal piecewise linear strategy, respectively, provide a satisfactory trade-off between computational complexity and network performance.

Unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) is at the heart of modern traffic sensing research due to its advantages of low cost, high flexibility, and wide view range over traditional traffic sensors. Recently, ...increasing efforts in UAV-based traffic sensing have been made, and great progress has been achieved on the estimation of aggregated macroscopic traffic parameters. Compared to aggregated macroscopic traffic data, there has been extensive attention on higher-resolution traffic data such as microscopic traffic parameters and lane-level macroscopic traffic parameters since they can help deeply understand traffic patterns and individual vehicle behaviours. However, little existing research can automatically estimate microscopic traffic parameters and lane-level macroscopic traffic parameters using UAV videos with a moving background. In this study, an advanced framework is proposed to bridge the gap. Specifically, three functional modules consisting of multiple processing streams and the interconnections among them are carefully designed with the consideration of UAV video features and traffic flow characteristics. Experimental results on real-world UAV video data demonstrate promising performances of the framework in microscopic and lane-level macroscopic traffic parameters estimation. This research pushes off the boundaries of the applicability of UAVs and has an enormous potential to support advanced traffic sensing and management.

Traffic speed is one of the critical indicators reflecting traffic status of roadway networks. The abnormality and sudden changes of traffic speed indicate the occurrence of traffic congestions, ...accidents, and events. Traffic control and management systems usually take the spatiotemporal variations of traffic speed as the critical evidence to dynamically adjust the traffic signal timing plan, broadcast traffic accidents, and form a management strategy. Meanwhile, transport is multimodal in most cities, including vehicles, pedestrians, and bicyclists. Traffic states of different traffic modes are usually used simultaneously as the significant input of advanced traffic control systems, e.g., multiobjective traffic signal control system, connected vehicles, and autonomous driving. In previous studies, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth passive sensing technology was demonstrated as an effective method for obtaining traffic speed data. However, there are some challenges that greatly affect the accuracy the estimated traffic speed, e.g., traffic mode uncertainty and the errors caused by sensors’ detection range. Thus, this study develops a real-time method for estimating the multimodal traffic speed of road networks covered by Wi-Fi and Bluetooth passive sensors. To address the two identified challenges, an algorithm is developed to correct the biased estimated traffic speed based on the received signal strength indicator of Wi-Fi and Bluetooth signals, and a novel semisupervised Possibilistic Fuzzy Formula Omitted-Means clustering algorithm is proposed for identifying traffic modes of Wi-Fi and Bluetooth device owners. The performance of the proposed algorithms is evaluated by comparing with the selected baseline algorithms. The experimental results indicate the superiority of the proposed algorithm. The proposed method of this study can provide accurate and real-time multimodal traffic speed information for supporting traffic control and management, and, thus, improving the operational performance of the whole road network.
