In recent years, human-machine interactions encompass many avenues of life, ranging from personal communications to professional activities. This trend has allowed for person identification based on ...behavior rather than physical traits to emerge as a growing research domain, which spans areas such as online education, e-commerce, e-communication, and biometric security. The expression of opinions is an example of online behavior that is commonly shared through the liking of online images. Visual aesthetic is a behavioral biometric that involves using a person's sense of fondness for images. The identification of individuals using their visual aesthetic values as discriminatory features is an emerging domain of research. This paper introduces a novel method for aesthetic feature dimensionality reduction using gene expression programming. The proposed system is capable of using a tree-based genetic approach for feature recombination. Reducing feature dimensionality improves classifier accuracy, reduces computation runtime, and minimizes required storage. The results obtained on a dataset of 200 Flickr users evaluating 40,000 images demonstrate a 95% accuracy of identity recognition based solely on users' aesthetic preferences.

In the context of critical global media studies, this article demonstrates how Western visual-aesthetic registers can invisibilize an existing place and its inhabitants through the uncritical ...celebration of its imagined futures. Taking Singapore as a case study, the article focuses on two sites of mediatization: the 2018 National Geographic documentary feature, City of the Future: Singapore, and 2019–20 media reports on the filming of HBO’s Westworld in Singapore. It argues that these media artifacts employ the trope of allochronic futurity: a denial of coevalness that seeks recourse in a future time-outside-time. This media trope is produced and sustained by two kinds of registers—a discursive register and a visual-aesthetic register—that inform promotional mediatized genres. While the promotional genres and discourses analyzed here construct Singapore’s distinctiveness, the visual-aesthetic register renders Singapore generic in its visualized futuristic-ness.
Low light image enhancement algorithms intent to produce visually pleasant images and target to extract valuable information for computer vision applications. The task of improving the quality of low ...light images is a challenging one. The existing methods for quality improvement undeniably annoy the visual aesthetics and suffer the major drawback of high computational complexity and less efficiency. To improve the visual quality and lower the distortions, a simple and computationally efficient low light image enhancement framework is presented in this study. To achieve this, an adaptive sigmoid transfer function (ASTF) is used and is derived from the sigmoid activation function of neural networks. By combining ASTF with a Laplacian operator, colour and contrast-enhanced images are obtained. Experiments show the effectiveness of the proposed method with state-of-the-art methods.

PurposeThis study aims to investigate the effects of two visual design principles, repetition and compositional lines, in a food image on purchase intention in the context of a mobile food delivery ...app and test the effect of crossmodal correspondences between vision and taste as a processing mechanism.Design/methodology/approachIn this study, two experiments were conducted using burgers and iced tea as stimuli.FindingsThe results demonstrate that repetition of an identical food product increases visual appeal for both burgers and iced tea. However, the optimal level of repetition was different between the two products. The findings show that different compositional lines generate different levels of visual appeal and the effects of compositional lines vary between burgers and iced tea. The results also validate the serial mediation effects of vision and taste between design principles and purchase intention.Originality/valueThe findings of this study add substantially to the understanding of visual information processing in food retailing by demonstrating how design principles such as repetition and compositional lines facilitate crossmodal responses between vision and taste and influence purchase decisions in a mobile platform. Also this study provides guidance as to how food retailers use design principles (e.g. repetition and compositional lines) for different products effectively when the food retailers develop visual digital content for a mobile app.

Films are meticulously crafted using visual aesthetic elements, where mathematics and geometry play pivotal roles. Camera angles, timing in editing, staging sequences, lens specifications, and ...lighting ratios, demonstrate the intricate relationship between cinema and mathematics. Specifically, the virtual projection of isosceles and equilateral triangles is utilized in object positioning before the camera. Additionally, forms such as circles, squares, and rectangles are frequently employed in stage design. Number combinations, sequential numbers, and patterns are also common techniques used to enhance visual aesthetics in films. Fundamental components such as oblique, horizontal, vertical, and parallel lines are instrumental in achieving visual appeal. In our research, we investigate the properties of these components as they are discussed in scientific publications and their relevance to aesthetics. In this context, a comparative and quantitative analysis is conducted on 2001’s “Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone” and the Turkish film “The Conquest 1453” (known as Fetih 1453 in Turkey). It is observed that “The Conquest 1453” employs excessive mathematical and geometric data, which somewhat diminishes the thematic strength of the film. In contrast, “Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone” demonstrates a more balanced use of these elements.
Each stylistic movement in building design and within its context throughout history is meant to possess a distinct visual character that is measurable in some way. From another perspective, building ...aesthetic measures in architecture have regularity included both experience and theories. Current styles of architecture are full of irregularity using a series of geometric construction which parametrically repeat themselves to produce complex images that could be defined as fractal. Recently, studying contemporary fractal dimensions in architecture has become significant as has been the metallic ratios in the past. In this study, fractal analysis is used to interpret current building elevation composition in a mathematical quantifiable way (boxcounting method). These measures are then verified by comparing results of questionnaires focused on habitats' perception of visual aesthetics of building elevation composition. This paper attempts to try to understand how fractal geometry contributes to the perception of buildings in their context and its participation in aesthetics measures. Findings confirm that highly dense fractals are not necessarily visually unpleasant, and that visual aesthetics are not correlated to fractal dimensions. This is due to the too many variables and conditions that are involved.

Innovative visual design plays an important role in marketing for attracting consumers’ attention in-store. Drawing upon thinking styles and design literature, this research investigates how ...consumers’ different thinking styles influence their evaluations of and attitudes toward the innovative visual design via perceived functional innovativeness. Findings indicate that consumers with a holistic (vs. analytic) thinking style, who integrate perspectives and open-mindsets, show more favorable attitudes toward a product with an innovative visual design. The results emphasize the mediating role of visually hinted functional innovativeness on the effect of a holistic thinking style on consumer attitudes.

PurposeThrough empirical research anchored in environmental psychology, the paper presents formative indicators that form an evaluation set “S.E.E.” (service environment evaluation), to simplify and ...systematize the measurement of visual aesthetics of servicescapes through consumers' perspective.Design/methodology/approachThe authors adopted formative index development methodology, employing a one-shot experimental design using photographic surrogates of four different servicescapes (n = 1400), and testing the index with eight noted global servicescape images.FindingsFindings reveal that visual aesthetics of servicescapes can be captured using the composite index we developed with five dimensions: complexity, coherence, legibility, mystery and novelty. Also, service type: hedonic/utilitarian, does influence how consumers evaluate servicescape visual appeal.Originality/valueFormative indicators constituting S.E.E. enables assessment of subjective visual aesthetics of servicescapes holistic, objective and an effortless task for marketers, designers and decision-makers; and helps them reliably decide on and skillfully design servicescapes with the required visual appeal.
