As an iconic image of our time, the selfie has attracted much attention in popular media and scholarly writing. The focus so far has been on the representation of the self or subjectivity. We propose ...a complementary perspective that foregrounds the intersubjective function of the selfie. We argue that the presence of selfhood is often an assumption. What distinguishes the selfie from other photographic genres is its ability to enact intersubjectivity – the possibility for difference of perspectives to be created and this difference to be shared between the image creator and the viewer. Based on a social semiotic analysis of selfies on Instagram, we identify four subtypes of selfie, each deploying a combination of visual resources to represent a distinct form of intersubjectivity. Our analysis suggests that the potential for empowerment is inherent in the visual structure of the selfie, and that, as a genre, it is open for recontextualisation across contexts and social media platforms.

Traditional English teaching methods primarily involve the teacher explaining textual knowledge, often leading to inefficient use of classroom time. This study employs functional linguistics, visual ...grammar, discourse analysis, and interactive communication theories to analyze multimodal discourse in teacher-student interactions within college English classrooms. The study employs both quantitative and qualitative methods, using ELAN annotation software to manually annotate and analyze classroom teaching videos and lessons on a second-by-second basis across multiple modalities. The results indicate that modal distribution varies across different stages of English teaching, with verbal moderation prevailing and non-verbal moderation serving as a supplement. Verbal interactions show that teacher discourse constitutes 42% of total course time, 1.24 times more than student discourse. These findings offer data-driven insights for teachers to refine their strategies and boost interaction in college English classes.
Multimodality is a new developing approach in linguistic studies which investigates various modes of meaning — from images to text and music. Women’s empowerment is the process where women are able ...to have greater choice and to seize more opportunities to improve their quality of life. However, sexual harassment, in particular, is a serious obstacle to achieve it and to women’s full realization of their human rights, because it restricts their freedom to move, study and work. Thus, this study sought to apply the principles of Kress and van Leeuwen’s Visual Grammar (2006) to conduct a multimodal analysis of a selection of anti-harassment posters published online and designed by Women between 2011 and 2017 in three different campaigns to observe the verbal and visual manifestations of women’s empowerment discourse. It aimed to study how these posters promote women’s self-confidence to encourage them to liberate themselves from patriarchal domination and to believe in their capabilities to overcome sexual harassment as one of the most oppressive dangers that threaten their participation in their societies. Keywords: Multimodality, Visual Grammar, posters, women’s empowerment, sexual harassment, Feminism. The study investigated the evocation of mental imagery and emotional responses when English–Chinese bilinguals read classic Chinese poems and their English translations to examine (1) the target ...readers' formation of non-verbal text representations of Chinese poetry and (2) whether different translations affect the target readers' imagery cognition. A total of 20 English–Chinese speaker students enrolled in a Chinese university read a classic Chinese poem in Chinese and its four versions of translation in English. Through questionnaires and interviews, participants rated the visualized words used in the poems for the degree of mental imagery and emotional response evoked based on three indicators of narrative process, salience value, and emotive validity in the theoretical framework of visual grammar. Results showed considerable individual variances in the cognitive differences in forming mental imagery in all versions of the poems and there were also effects of translation strategy. Moreover, visual language information in poetry reading and its translations evoked different emotional responses depending on the use of visual words with cultural features. Our study demonstrates the applicability and accessibility of visual language in describing different readers' mental imagery and the interrelation and interaction between the poetry language system and the emotional, social, and cultural contexts involved in poetry translation.
Different models of masculinity have been introduced in society and, consequently, in discourse in the last decades. This article will approach the portrayal of masculinity in a sample of Dolce & ...Gabbana advertisements published in their newsletter from 1 January 2016 until 1 January 2021. The main objectives of this article are the following: 1) to deconstruct the main visual strategies used by Dolce & Gabbana to represent men in its newsletter; and 2) to characterize the main types of men's representation as social actors, in order to observe and systematize the predominant models of masculinity. The analysis will be done taking into consideration the model of visual social actors proposed by van Leeuwen (2008) and visual grammar (Kress & van Leeuwen, 2021), in order to deconstruct the main characteristics of the visuals and to observe how masculinity is portrayed from the visual point of view. The findings indicate that the predominant model is connected with classical masculinity although there are texts in which other types of masculinities are presented.

The protection of wildlife in Indonesia is still one of the important topics in the design of media campaigns. Among the various forms of campaign media that socialize is a media campaign in the form ...of animated music videos. This study discusses a two-dimensional animated music video entitled “Sabda Alam” by SMK Raden Umar Said Kudus, which tells about endemic birds in Indonesia. The purpose of this research is to formulate the elements in the animated music video to be used as a visual grammar model. This research used a combination method in the form of quantitative and qualitative analysis. Quantitatively, the data shows that this animated music video can have a positive influence on the audience, so that the audience feels more concerned about environmental problems, especially about endangered animals in Indonesia. Qualitatively, the analysis refers to the elements in the visual communication design using a visual grammar approach from Christian Leborg which consists of abstract elements, concrete elements, activities elements, and relations elements. The results of the analysis of this study formulate a visual grammar model that combines formalistic aspects in the basic design, animated film structure, cinematography, and layers of sign meaning based on semiotic theory. This research is expected to be a scientific reference in making animated music videos as a media campaign, and to be able to inspire creators to develop other environmental-themed creative economy products. Purpose This paper aims to examine the impact of using visual grammar on learning participle adjectives by EFL (English as a Foreign Language) learners. Design/methodology/approach The study follows ...an experimental design in which two groups participated in the study. The experimental group used visual grammar tools in learning participle adjectives. The control group was taught the participle adjectives in a traditional way. A pre–post test was designed and presented to the participants in the two groups. Findings The results showed that the experimental group made statistically significant improvements in their performance in using participle adjectives due to the use of visual grammar tools. Research limitations/implications The current study is only limited to the effect of visual images on a particular grammatical issue, that is participle adjectives. Besides, the study does not include the gender variable; there may be variation in the results depending on the variable of gender. Practical implications The present study can provide language instructors with some guidelines on how to incorporate visual grammar applications in teaching grammar aspects. Learners can also be encouraged to have a better understanding of English grammar, using the different connotations of visual images. Social implications Using visual images in teaching grammar will increase the learners' ability to think beyond their classroom environment. They can use this experience whenever they face visual images in different societal activities. Originality/value This paper is one of the initial attempts to investigate the effect of using visual grammar on learning participle adjectives.
Children's picture books are complex multimodal texts. Meaning is created when modes interplay with each other. As a multimodal text, the author and the illustrator play a role in the utilization of ...semiotic resources, whether verbal or visual. The study of multimodality in translation studies acknowledges this. Yet, current translational practices remain inadequate for the description and analysis of translated children's picture books. Despite that, a call for interdisciplinary research in both fields has been established. This call expands the scope of translation by examining past and current practices and describing them. This paper aims to consolidate the translation of children's picture books from a multimodal perspective dedicated to children's picture books. Furthermore, it calls for an integration of multimodality into translation studies as translation is the transfer of meaning contained in semiotic modes.
