Glyphosate is the most widely utilized herbicide worldwide due to its effectiveness in controlling agricultural weeds. However, its persistence in aquatic ecosystems has raised concerns about the ...well-being of non-target organisms such as fish. This study aimed to evaluate the effects of chronic exposure (21 days) to glyphosate or its formulated product Roundup Transorb R®, at an environmentally relevant concentration permitted by regulations in certain countries (65 μg/L of glyphosate), on the locomotor activity and reproductive success of the fish Jenynsia lineata, as well as on the morphology/development and locomotor activity of its offspring, as intergenerational effects. Neither the pure nor formulated herbicide altered the distance traveled and velocity of adult fish exposed to the herbicide (F0), but they negatively affected reproductive success, decreasing the percentage of positive response to the presence of the female, reducing the number of gravid females, causing abortions, and lowering offspring survival (F1). In the F1 generation, a decrease in weight and length was noted along with developmental abnormalities in both treatment groups (pure or formulated glyphosate), with the formulation causing more harm. Observed developmental abnormalities included muscle atrophy, ascites, pigmentary disorders, vertebral agenesis, spinal deviation, and exophthalmia. Furthermore, parental exposure to pure glyphosate led to an increase in the distance traveled and velocity of F1 (hyperlocomotion), whereas exposure to the formulated product resulted in a decrease in these behaviors (hypolocomotion) of F1. These findings highlight the toxic effects of glyphosate at very low concentrations, although varying between pure and formulated, and demonstrate the intergenerational consequences of herbicide exposure, underscoring the risk to the survival of fish offspring in glyphosate-contaminated environments.

Total mercury (THg) concentrations were measured in muscle and liver of two placental viviparous sharks, the Pacific sharpnose shark (Rhizoprionodon longurio) and the brown smooth-hound (Mustelus ...henlei); as well as in the muscle, liver, and yolk of the yolk-sac viviparous speckled guitarfish (Pseudobatos glaucostigmus) in Baja California Sur. The aim was to determine which factors could be involved in maternal transfer and resultant maternal and embryonic THg concentration. Higher THg concentrations were found in pregnant females compared to embryos paired tissues. THg concentrations of embryo tissues decreased with total length (TL), except for the muscle of the Pacific sharpnose shark. THg concentrations of embryo muscle was positively related to THg concentration in the muscle of pregnant females. Embryos TL, muscle THg concentration of pregnant females, percentage of THg concentration in embryos, along with the reproductive strategy are relevant factors required to improve our understanding of THg concentration in embryo tissues.

In viviparous fish, a considerable degree of variation in placental structures have been described. However, no distinct structures are reported in Scorpaenidae. In this study, we demonstrate a new type of folliculogenesis and follicular placentation in Sebastes schlegelii. Before copulation, the germinal epithelium gradually surrounds the oocytes and develops into individually follicles with a stalk-like structure hanging on the ovigerous lamella, which ensures each follicle have access to spermatozoa after copulation. From V to early gestation stage, the cyp17-I highly expressesaccompanied by cyp19a1a signals disappearance, and 11-ketotestosterone level keeps rising and peaks at blastula stage, while 17β-estradiol declines to the bottom. Meanwhile, the theca cells rapidly proliferate and invade outwards forming a highly hypertrophied and folded microvillous placenta. This unbalance of hormone might be an important factor driving the theca cells proliferation and invasion. Additionally, some conserved genes related to mammalian placentation are significantly high expression in follicular placenta suggesting the high convergence in vertebrate placenta evolution.

In viviparous teleosts, intraovarian gestation occurs intrafollicularly, as in poeciliids, or intraluminally, as in goodeids and anablepids. Furthermore, there are two different forms of embryonic ...nutrition: lecithotrophy and matrotrophy; depending on the species, these can be exclusive or coexist during gestation. In matrotrophic species, nutrients are transmitted from the mother to the embryo and are especially important in species with intraluminal gestation. Jenynsia lineata is a South American viviparous teleost with intraluminal gestation, characterized by eggs with scarce yolk, which is resorbed when embryos are 6 mm long, thus developing a branchial placenta. Using histological, histochemical, and immunohistochemical techniques, the present study describes the characteristics and changes of the ovarian mucosa in J. lineata during gestational and nongestational phases, and analyzes the embryonic pharyngeal epithelium in the branchial placenta. The ovaries of 30 adult female specimens were processed using histological techniques and stained with hematoxylin‐eosin, Masson's trichrome, and Alcian Blue pH 2.5/periodic acid Schiff reagent. To detect cell proliferation, we used antiproliferating cell nuclear antigen antibody. In nonpregnant females, eosinophilic granular cells (EGCs) and lymphocytes were identified in the lamina propria of the tunica mucosa, and melanomacrophage centers (MMCs) and fibroblasts were identified adjacent to tissue debris in the ovarian folds'. In the cellular debris, an embryo in resorption was observed. In pregnant females, the ovarian mucosa has thin vascularization branches entering the opercular chamber of the embryos, in close contact with the forming gill processes, thereby establishing a branchial placenta. Active cell replacement was observed in these ovarian branches. The identification of fibroblasts, lymphocytes, EGCs, and MMCs adjacent to tissue debris could indicate that these cell types are involved in the embryonic resorption process. Considering the new data obtained in this study on the branchial placenta of J. lineata, we conclude that cell proliferation could be involved in the development of maternal–embryonic interaction.
The ovary of viviparous teleosts is an organ bounded by the coelomic cavity. In Jenynsia lineata samples, the tunica mucosa presented evaginations extending into the lumen of the organ, called ovarian folds. During gestation, thin branches extend from the ovarian folds into the opercular chamber of the embryos and locate in close interaction with the forming gill processes. This maternal–embryonic interaction established the branchial placenta. The epithelium of the ovarian branches showed positivity for antiproliferating cell nuclear antigen antibody.

Abstract
The water skinks Eulamprus tympanum and Eulamprus heatwolei show thermally induced sex determination where elevated temperatures give rise to male offspring. Paradoxically, Eulamprus species ...reproduce in temperatures of 12–15 °C making them outliers when compared with reptiles that use temperature as a cue for sex determination. Moreover, these two species are among the very few viviparous reptiles reported to have thermally induced sex determination. Thus, we tested whether these skinks possess undetected sex chromosomes with thermal override. We produced transcriptome and genome data for E. heatwolei. We found that E. heatwolei presents XY chromosomes that include 14 gametologs with regulatory functions. The Y chromosomal region is 79–116 Myr old and shared between water and spotted skinks. Our work provides clear evidence that climate could be useful to predict the type of sex determination systems in reptiles and it also indicates that viviparity is strictly associated with sex chromosomes.
Sebastes schlegelii is a typical viviparous teleost with six months sperm storage duration from November to April. In this study, spermatozoa morphological and physiological characteristics and sperm ...location in the female ovary were investigated by electron microscopy, computer-assisted sperm analyzer and histologic analysis, respectively. During copulation, we observed that spermatozoa in the testis had mature structure with rod-shaped head, a short midpiece, and a long flagellum. And further verified sperm swam freely at a high speed in the ovary fluid. After copulation, we only found swimming sperm in the ovary fluid at the early storage stage (November to December) and the majority of sperm were scattered randomly in the ovary cavity and partially concentrated in the crypt between the oocyte and stalk of follicle. Thereafter, the ovarian epithelium around the oocytes proliferated rapidly and wrapping spermatozoa outside of the follicular layer and formed a lot of crypts outside of the follicular layer which served as the sperm storage site until fertilization. The present findings would be useful for further understanding the mechanism of long-term sperm storage in viviparous teleost.

Dictyocaulus viviparus, the causative agent of bovine parasitic bronchitis, is an important parasite of dairy cattle. Infections can lead to substantial economic losses, due to mortality, reduced weight gain and milk production and treatment costs. There have been relatively few studies investigating herd management risk factors for infections with D. viviparus and lungworm-associated production losses. The aims of this study were (1) to assess the impact of (sub)clinical lungworm infections on productivity in dairy cows and, (2) to identify or confirm risk factors, related to herd management, for infections in grazing dairy cattle. Using a recombinant Major Sperm Protein (MSP)-based ELISA, the presence of D. viviparus antibodies in bulk tank milk (BTM) samples was evaluated on 717 and 634 farms at two-week intervals during two grazing seasons (2018 and 2019). Associations between milk antibody levels and production data (mean milk yield in kg/cow/day, percentage of fat and protein) were assessed, as well as associations with putative risk factors in the herd management, gathered through a questionnaire survey.
In both years, there was a substantial, but non-significant, difference in the annual mean milk yield on farms with at least one BTM sample above the cut-off of 0.41 ODR, compared with the mean milk yield on farms that stayed under this threshold on each sampling day (-0.17 and -0.70 kg milk/cow/day in 2018 and 2019, respectively). In 2019, this association was stronger, and significant, when the cut-off was exceeded in at least two consecutive BTM samples (-1.74 kg milk/cow/day). BTM results were also significantly negatively associated with the closest milk production data during the two-weekly BTM sampling intervals in 2019.
A single or two consecutive positive tests were used in the risk factor analysis as a proxy for lungworm-associated milk yield losses. Purchase of new animals (Odds Ratio (OR) = 2.68) and the proportion of the first grazing season covered by preventive anthelmintic treatment (OR up to 3.88, depending on proportion) were positively associated with lungworm-associated milk yield losses, while mowing at least 50 % of the pastures (OR = 0.57) was negatively associated with lungworm-associated milk yield losses.
Our results suggest that the ELISA holds promise to identify herds with significant production losses due to lungworm infections, under the condition that BTM sampling is done repeatedly during the grazing season. Based on the confirmed risk factors, adjustments of the farm management could perhaps mitigate these losses.

The male external genitalia of the black rockfish (Sebastes schlegelii Hilgendorf, 1880) is a fleshy protrusion known as the urogenital papilla (UGP), which functions to deliver sperm into the female ...reproductive tract for internal fertilization. It is not known which genes regulate the development of the UGP. The aim of this study was to identify key genes that regulate the development of the UGP in black rockfish and to determine the distribution of androgen receptor gene (ar) in the UGP. A total of 26 adult males and 560 juvenile fish were used in the experiment, in which we divided all normally developing juveniles into normal development and androgen groups. We added methyltestosterone solution (100 µg/l) to the androgen group-treated fish tank, soaked for 2 h per day for 38 days, and sampled 5∼10 samples each time every 5 days during the culture process. Gene expression changes related to UGP were analyzed with tissue specificity between control and androgen groups during sex differentiation, adult male maturation, and the copulation stage (September to December) using real-time quantitative polymerase chain reaction. The expression of ar was also localized by two-color in situ hybridization in the UGP region of juvenile fish. Androgen treatment enhanced ar expression levels and the ar signal was stronger in the UGP region of both adult breeding fish and androgen-treated juvenile fish. This study provides insights into the regulation of the external genitalia of black rockfish and presents vital information for the artificial breeding of viviparous fish. Summary Sentence We found that the ara, arb, mafb and shha genes may play important roles in the development of the male reproductive system and mating organs in black rockfish. Graphical Abstract

Раковина у моллюсков постепенно формируется в течение всей жизни и отражает особенности питания особей в разном возрасте. Проведены исследования стабильных изотопов углерода и азота раковин чужеродных моллюсков Viviparus viviparus (Linnaeus, 1758), собранных в Новосибирском водохранилище. Отмечены статистически значимые различия изотопного состава фрагментов раковин, соответствующих годичному приросту разных лет. Высказано предположение о значимой роли межгодовых различий трофических условий в водохранилище в формировании изотопной подписи раковин моллюсков. Результаты работы могут быть использованы в экологических и палеолимнологических исследованиях питания моллюсков, при реконструкции долговременных изменений экологических условий водоемов.
The type series of Semisulcospira multigranosa Boettger, 1886 was found in the Malacological Collection at the Senckenberg Naturmuseum for the first time ca. 135 years after its original description. ...The syntypes consisted of 38 specimens that can be classified into four species. The examination of adult shell morphology of these original materials revealed that the current taxonomic account of S. multigranosa should be amended. Therefore, we designate a lectotype for S. multigranosa, and thus describe S. multigranosa auct. as Semisulcospira davisi sp. nov. Semisulcospira davisi can be discriminated from the other congeners by the characteristics of adult and embryonic shells, and radulae morphology. The present study resolves one of the fundamental taxonomic problems remaining in Semisulcospira snails.
