Employee volunteering is a topic of growing importance in workplaces around the globe. Likewise, research on employee volunteering has seen a marked increase over the past decade, particularly in ...leading management and psychology outlets. Despite this increasing visibility, there is little consensus on the state of the literature or directions for the future. In particular, research is currently based on a variety of different definitions and operationalizations and is spread across several disciplines. In order to advance management research on employee volunteering, this review focuses on three contributions: (1) clarifying the definition and various forms of employee volunteering, (2) reviewing the current body of knowledge on employee volunteering, and (3) providing a future research agenda for the role of employee volunteering in the workplace.

Increasing third-party intervention in volunteering represents a key change in the environment of volunteering. One significant expression is “workfare volunteering”: the governmental use of ...volunteering to foster the economic and/or social reintegration of social assistance recipients. We contribute to existing theory on “third-party volunteering” by studying the shifting discursive field in which volunteering becomes re-entangled with workfare volunteering. Our contribution is based on a governmentality-inspired discourse analysis of internal documents on workfare volunteering in one Belgian social assistance center. We conclude that workfare volunteering entails a strong violation of “voluntary” and “unpaid” properties of volunteering, relegates volunteering to an inferior status relative to paid work, and depicts workfare volunteers as suffering from a clear deficit: the inability to work under regular labor market condition. Through the discursive entanglement of various citizenship frames, the workfare volunteer is cast as an ever-aspiring, yet permanently failing citizen.

Feedback avoiding behavior is considered undesirable by organizations. Nevertheless, we know little about whether it can have benefits outside the workplace. Drawing on the conservation of resources ...theory, we explore why and when participating in feedback avoiding behavior may possess benefits. The results from two experiments and a field study illustrate that engaging in feedback avoiding behavior is associated with decreased emotional exhaustion, which then spills over into employee volunteering behavior. Moreover, regulatory focus moderates the observed effects. Specifically, the negative relationship of feedback avoiding behavior with emotional exhaustion and the positive indirect effect of feedback avoiding behavior on volunteering behavior via emotional exhaustion is stronger when the employee prevention focus is high. Theoretical contributions and practical implications as well as future research directions are presented.

Drawing on online survey data from 816 U.S.-based volunteers, this study finds that active online volunteers are also active offline volunteers, suggesting that volunteering in one sphere can complement volunteering in the other sphere. This study discusses implications for understanding volunteering as a complex activity where individuals engage in varied organizational contexts to different degrees and extend their participation to both online and offline spheres. Das heutige Medienumfeld macht eine ehrenamtliche Online-Tätigkeit möglich, die ausgeübt werden kann, ohne dass die Ehrenamtlichen physisch anwesend oder mit einer traditionellen Organisation verbunden sind. Die vorliegende Studie stellt die traditionellen Arten der ehrenamtlichen Arbeit in Frage und erklärt die neuen Trends. Sie ermittelt unterschiedliche Arten ehrenamtlicher Online- und Offline-Tätigkeiten und untersucht die Beziehung zwischen ihnen. Unter Berufung auf Daten aus einer Online-Befragung von 816 Ehrenamtlichen in den USA kommt man zu dem Ergebnis, dass Personen, die ehrenamtlich online aktiv sind, sich auch offline ehrenamtlich engagieren, was darauf hindeutet, dass eine ehrenamtliche Tätigkeit in einem Bereich die ehrenamtliche Tätigkeit in einem anderen Bereich ergänzen kann. Der Beitrag diskutiert die Implikationen für das Verständnis der ehrenamtlichen Arbeit als eine komplexe Aktivität, bei der Personen in verschiedenen organisatorischen Kontexten in unterschiedlichem Umfang tätig sind und ihr Engagement sowohl Online- als auch Offline-Tätigkeiten umfassen kann. El entorno mediático contemporáneo permite el voluntariado online en el que los voluntarios pueden participar sin estar físicamente presentes o estar afiliados a una organización tradicional. Cuestionando los tipos tradicionales de voluntariado y tomando en cuenta las nuevas tendencias, el presente estudio identifica diferentes tipos de voluntariado online y offline y examina la relación entre ambos. Recurriendo a datos de encuestas online de 816 voluntarios estadounidenses, el presente documento encuentra que los voluntarios online activos son también voluntarios offline activos, lo que sugiere que el voluntariado en una esfera puede complementar al voluntariado en la otra esfera. El presente documento trata las implicaciones para comprender el voluntariado como una actividad compleja en la que los individuos se comprometen en contextos organizativos variados en diferentes grados y amplían su participación tanto en la esfera online como en la offline.

The article presents the results of a review of studies conducted in the period from 2020 to 2022 in the field of emergency volunteering. The purpose of the review is to identify relevant areas of ...research, describe the characteristics of rescue volunteers and the specifics of the work of volunteer organisations operating in the field of public safety. Particular attention was paid to the use of new digital and technical means in the work of volunteers. Rescue volunteering is the most specialised and skill-rich volunteering activity, and is also involves significant health risks, both physical and psychological. In this regard, the conclusion identified the main barriers to the development of emergency volunteering in Russia. The most pronounced and frequently raised topic remains the problem of effective interaction and competent communication between volunteers and employees of state rescue services.
Abstract Italy was the first Western country to be severely affected by the COVID-19 pandemic. Within it, immigrants have played an important role as essential workers and throughout solidarity ...initiatives. The present article is based on 64 in-depth interviews with immigrants who engaged in solidarity actions directed toward the immigrant population and the host society during the COVID-19 pandemic. Analytically, it emerged that through solidaristic initiatives, immigrants articulated what we called ‘ claims of recognition.’ Recognition here is considered in both its individual form, as interpersonal acceptance and esteem for single immigrants, and its collective form, as the social regard of immigrant groups as constituents of Italian society. Despite being perhaps 'elementary,' these claims aim to fight forms of both non-recognition and mis-recognition that are pervasive in Italy and aim to transform the symbolic 'fabric' of this country.

Abstract Volunteering is associated with health-promoting benefits for both recipients and volunteers and may contribute to a more inclusive society. However, studies have shown a persistent pattern ...of social inequality among those who volunteer, and immigrants participate as volunteers less than the majority population. To date, approaches for recruiting immigrant populations have not been sufficiently examined, even though multicultural societies are becoming increasingly diverse. This study investigates how recruitment is carried out in voluntary organizations and how volunteers who are involved in recruitment reflect on the inclusion of citizens with immigrant backgrounds. Qualitative interviews were conducted with 18 volunteers and three employees with recruitment responsibility at five voluntary organizations engaged in welfare and community-related activities in a semirural district in Norway. Our findings show that different structural factors and individual aspects of the recruiter influence the recruitment of immigrants as volunteers. Large-scale organizations are more professionalized and more directed by fundings and frameworks and demand more qualifications due to their volunteer tasks. This might make inclusive recruitment more challenging. Small-scale organizations have more flexibility and less professionalized volunteer activities, making recruitment more inclusive. In addition, if the small-scale organizations are minority driven, it seems to positively influence the recruitment of immigrants through increased diversity sensitivity and more connections with immigrants through their social network.

Mutual aid groups have been an indispensable part of the public response to the COVID-19 pandemic. They have provided many forms of support, in particular grocery shopping which has enabled people to ...self-isolate if required. While community solidarity during emergencies and disasters is common, previous studies have shown that such solidarity behaviors tend to decline over time, even when needs remain high. In this study, we address how mutual aid groups can be sustained over time in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic. We conducted 32 interviews with organizers of COVID-19 mutual aid and community support groups in the United Kingdom between September 2020 and January 2021. Based on a reflexive thematic analysis, we identified several community and group level experiences and strategies that were related to sustained participation in COVID-19 mutual aid groups. Meeting community needs over time with localized action and resources and building trust and community-based alliances were foundational elements in the COVID-19 mutual aid groups. Group processes strategies, such as a culture of care and support and regular group meetings, were used to help to sustain involvement. Some experiences resulting from participation in COVID-19 mutual aid groups were also related to sustained participation, including positive emotions (e.g., joy, pride), well-being and sense of efficacy, and an increasing sense of local community belonging and cohesion. Based on these findings, we propose four practical recommendations for sustaining mutual aid groups to assist public engagement with protective behaviors in the COVID-19 pandemic and beyond. We recommend providing practical and financial support to COVID-19 mutual aid groups; to mobilize the knowledge and the experiences acquired by COVID-19 mutual aid groups for developing programs and interventions for addressing the medium and long-term impacts of COVID-19; to prioritize community-level interventions; and to recognize the role of group processes as these have the potential to lead to long-term community responses. These approaches will be key for ensuring that communities effectively recover from the COVID-19 pandemic.
