Epigenetic mechanisms in osteoporosis [Elektronski vir]Ostanek, Barbara, 1972- ...Osteoporosis is a complex disorder that is highly dependent on genetic and environmental factors. The environmental factors, such as dietary habits and lifestyle, cause changes in DNA methylation, ... histone modification, and expression of noncoding RNAs, which can be reversed with pharmacological agents and are therefore important targets for the development of novel therapies. Here we review the current understanding of the epigenetic mechanisms that are linked to osteoporosis. We included studies investigating DNA methylation, histone modifications, and microRNAs (miRNAs) on genomic scale or individual DNA regions or miRNA molecules. These studies revealed that epigenetic mechanisms contribute to the development and progression of osteoporosis including by influence on the two major bone remodeling pathways Wnt/%-catenin and RANK/RANKL/OPG. The data sets created in the studies reviewed here are therefore an important resource for the understanding of bone homeostasis and osteoporosis pathogenesis as well as new treatment development or biomarker identification.Source: Epigenetics of aging and longevity [Elektronski vir] (Str. 365-388)Type of material - e-articlePublish date - 2018Language - englishCOBISS.SI-ID - 4486001
