Translation issues with nominal premodification = Problemi pri prevajanju samostalniških prilastkov : diplomsko deloFritz-Kunc, ŽigaIn my diploma thesis, I present the translation issues that I encountered when translating the animated series Yu-Gi-Oh! from English to Slovene for the purpose of voiceover. The main focus of my ... thesis is noun phrases with nominal premodifiers, which are, owing to to their compactness, a very productive tool in the English language. I discuss, among other things, the issue of length, which is of paramount importance when translating for voiceover, and the issue of vocabulary, which is often problematic when translating certain types of texts (animated movies, comic books, etc.) into Slovene. The main disadvantage of noun + noun phrases is ambiguity, which is the reason why such phrases are not overused in everyday English. Resolving ambiguity is also the main issue in translation becase relations between nouns in noun + noun phrases are often obscured and the translator needs to rely on context or intuition to determine the exact meaning of a phrase before translating it. An extensive analysis of these relations led to the establishment of the concept positive ambiguity, which implies that the ambiguity of noun + noun phrases is not only a disadvantage but potentially also a great advantage. Positive ambiguity allows unusual noun + noun phrases to exist because they can avoid explicitly-impled relations which would make them seem awkward or, more importantly, it representes several layers of meaning packed into a single phrase, which is the true value of positive ambiguity. I also analyse the Slovene structures used to translate English noun + noun phrases. The most productive Slovene structure is the adjective + noun, followed by the genitive case, prepositional phrase, and appositional structures. Finally, I analyse the options in Slovene to preserve positive ambiguity, the genitive case structure being the closest in this regard.Type of material - undergraduate thesis ; adult, seriousPublication and manufacture - Ljubljana : [Ž.
