    This diploma paper deals with two Scandinavian pioneer women who emigrated to North America in the late 19th century. I focused on the novels O Pioneers! and Giants in the Earth, written by authors ... who experienced the hardships of immigrating. The purpose of my analysis is to show how differently two female protagonists accept and respond to changes brought by moving to a distant and unknown land. In introduction I very briefly touch upon the woman's social role throughout the history and illustrate homesteading challenges in America in the late 19th century. The introducing section of the main body of my thesis consists of a detailed analysis of Alexandra Bergson (O Pioneers!) and Beret Hansa (Giants in the Earth).In the second part, I highlight and compare the main differences and similarities between the two protagonists and support them with various quotations from the novels as well as literary criticism. I conclude with a short summary of my findings from the main body of my work as well as provide my own opinion on the topic of the diploma thesis.
