BPMN (Business Process Modeling Notation) is a standard for business process modeling and provides a graphical notation for specifying business processes in a Business Process Diagram (BPD). The ...Business Process Execution Language (BPEL) on the other hand is commonly accepted standard for implementation of business processes. The automated translation between BPMN and BPEL, which is also called Round-tripping, plays a crucial role in providing unified and standard based business process development environment. However, it often turns out, that, due to some important differences between both domains, the mapping is not as straightforward as it may seem. This article presents the translation between BPMN and BPEL, outlines some workflow patterns which can't be mapped directly and identifies key advantages and disadvantages of the mapping described.
