Research centres of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences were established in the year 2001 in Slovakia, Trans-Carpathia, Transsylvania and the Voivodina region in order to study minority language use, ...changes in Hungarian language contacts and the domains of Hungarian language use outside the borders of Hungary. These linguistic centres were complemented with individual research locations in Austria, Croatia and Slovenia; thus a virtual network of cross-border Hungarian linguistic workshops was completed. Joint research programs are coordinated by the Research Institute of Ethnic and National Minorities and the Research Institute for Linguistics of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences (MTA). This study aims to highlight the documentary research carried out by these linguistic centres on a thesaurus, with the aim of producing a range of glossaries and dictionaries. Apart from focusing on the individual work done in these centres - dealing with description of the linguistic varieties used in the states proper in the form of dictionaries or dialect glossaries - the study is mainly concerned with the process of "border abolition". The term "border abolition" refers to the embedding of national variants of Hungarian outside Hungary in the dictionaries and manuals of the Hungarian language. Considering its importance, the process mentioned above can only be achieved by means or coordinating concepts and fostering interregional cooperation among research stations. Its aim is to make Hungarian dictionaries and manuals - which, ever since the Treaty of Versailles (Paris) 1919 and even more noticeably after 1945, have dealt mainly with the Hungarian language as used in Hungary - all-Hungarian and universal.
