  • The improvement of wetting in AlN▫$_p$▫ - Al▫$_l$▫ system achieved by an exothermic interface reaction
    Kevorkijan, Varužan
Very recently AlN powder has recommended as a cost effective filler for new generation of MMCs. Because AlN is completely stable in contact with Al, and thus will not be adversely affected during ... various metallurgical treatments such as mixing, casting, annelaling or even recycling, it has been suggested as a desirable alternative to SiC and ▫$Al_2O3$▫. However, it is important to note that AlN does not wet alloys spontaneously. In this paper, a novel processing route for direct immersion of 20 vol.% of particles in an Al alloy melt has been described. The chemically improved wetting behaviour is based on an exothermic interface reaction: ▫$3TiO_2$▫(rutile) particles in carbon layer formed in situ at the surface of AlN particles by pyrolysis of phenolic resin. The potential of a novel way of indtroducing AlN particles in an Al alloy melt has been demonstrated using fine (4-7 micrometers) AlN powder from ART, Buffalo.
