  • Physico-chemical properties of printing thickeners after recycling : doctoral dissertation
    Fijan, Rebeka
During textile printing large amounts of printing paste residues are produced after cleaning of printing equipment and containers at each colour change and due to preparation of excess paste to ... prevent shortfalls. Printing pastes that adhere to every implement due to their high viscosity are removed with dry capture systems before rinsing with water and disposed of in segregated form, thus minimizing water consumption. Alternatively separate collection of printing pastes residues allows an appropriate "cleaning" treatment and consequent thickener recycling. In this research sodium salts of alginate, carboxymethylated guar gum and carboxymethylated cellulose thickeners were used for the preparation of printing paste residues and waste water after screen printing of cotton with reactive dyes. Polysaccharide thickeners were precipitated from printing pastes residues (prepared with original and firstly recycled thickeners) and waste water concentrates (separated with membrane filtration technique) in a water-ethanol mixture, cleaned, dried and milled. Thickener matrices and printing pastes were studied via rheological measurements with a rotational controlled stress rheometer. Molecular weight averages and molecular weight distribution of thickeners were determined by size exclusion chromatography. Original and recycled thickeners were used as rheological media in flat screen printing of cotton with reactive dyes and qualitative parameters of printing were determined The effects produced by thickener "cleaning" detected in steady and oscillatory shear conditions show moderate changes in rheological properties. The influences of primary and secondary recycling on rheological quantities are strongly connected to changes in the molecular weight averages and polydispersity of thickeners. Qualitative parameters of prints using recycled thickeners are comparable to those obtained with the original thickeners. "Cleaned" thickeners can thus be easily reused for screen printing of cotton with reactive dyes, provided that the printing paste recipe is adjusted to fit a rheological constraint of equal viscosity (7Pas at shear rate 10s-1) in the steady shear conditions.
