  • Gear teeth geometry optimisation using global optimisation approach
    Ciglarič, Iztok ...
During the gear meshing, gear tooth flanks slide and roll one over another. Geometrically, sliding and rolling could be described by using the equivalent model of two contacting cylinders having the ... same radius as the local radius of curvature of mechanical elements at any point of the real contact. For a gear couple specific sliding is a measure of wear of the tooth flanks. Specific sliding should be equal and minimal for a tooth tip of pinion (gear) and a tooth root of gear (pinion). In general high specific sliding causes heat generating, resulting in a substantial increase of the temperature of contacting surfaces. Due to the rolling the tooth flanks are subject to the normal pressure. Consequently, regarding the rolling-sliding circumstances, gear flanks damaging can appear severely conditioning service life of the gear-pair. Specific sliding and Hertz pressure are geometry depend. Geometry is influenced by the addendum modification coefficient (AMC) [DIN 1996]. To maximise the service life of the gear pair optimal value of AMC has to be chosen, in order to satisfy prescribed criteria for specific sliding and Hertzpressure. The optimisation problem is addressed in the form of non-linearprogramming problem. The objective of this approach is to determine the optimal values of th7e AMC and minimise specific sliding, while Hertz pressure has to remain within the specified values. The global optimisation method is used in order to find the optimal solution. The adaptive grid refinement (AGR) algorithm procedure is applied. The gear flank geometry resulting from the optimisation modulus is subsequently analysed regarding thenormal loads resulting from the gear meshing. Contact detection algorithm in the framework of the contact problem analysis with the finite element method using Overhauser splines [Ulaga 1998] is used. Stress distribution pattern of the original and optimised gear profile are evaluated and compared.
