Fatigue assessment of bolted bar connections in crane structures

Paper is concerned with computational and experimental fatigue assessment of the bolted bar connection in the lattice boom crawler cranes. First, a stress field in the bar end connection is ...determined by solving the contact problem between the bolt, connection plates and the bar by means of the finite element analysis for three different bar designs. Then, the fatigue analysis was performed using the strain-life approach. The selected bar design was experimentally analysed with full-scale testing. Comparison of computational and experimental results consider a critical number of applied loading cycles, when failure could be expected at the most critical location of the bar. Computational and experimental results show some discrepancies, which canbe attributed to the bar production process.
