  • Statistical fluctuations on a wave record of finite size

    It is suggested that in rather special wave systems, such as wave groups, the observed fluctuations in the statistical parameters on a small record may be due to the fact that such a record does not ... contain a sufficiently large nor an integer number of groups. The relative error in the r.m.s. elevation made in taking a small record instead of a large one is computed in the case of a group of two waves and a hint is given for the more general case of a group of P waves. A numerical example deals with a real situation, for which a 2 min record would exibit a fluctuation of 7,3%
