Margot Anne Carothers, 27, was shot by Morris in the head Jan. 11, 1988 as an act of mercy after his brother Charles stabbed her in the abdomen, said Morris's lawyer Doug MacEachern. The men had about five drinks in two hours and Charles had talked to Carothers a couple of times outside the bar without incident. The group then left for Lance's home and shortly after they arrived, Carothers drove up and asked to speak to Charles. "The shooting of Margot by Lance Morris was an act of mercy," said MacEachern. "She was mortally wounded. There was very little prospect she would survive. It was a very unfortunate decision - the worst choice he could have made."
