Within the cubist movement, the artists who did engravings usually chose traditional forms : the aquafortis, the dry point and the burin print. Breaking both with modernism and with the primitivism then in vogue, their engravings evoke older schools. The cubist engravings of Braque, Picasso, Villon and Marcoussis remind us of the works of the professional French engravers of the classical period. This characteristic of their engravings is clearly connected with the facet and the scoring techniques in cubist painting. Above all, however, it must be seen as an interrogation within western engraving as to its own origins.
