•The relationship between self-concept and mental well-being has been well-researched in the literature. However, the use of variables that consider the contextual background of the samples causes the findings incomparable.•Using simple-structural self-concept variables derived from the Hierarchical Classes Analyses (HICLAS), we found that a more differentiated self is associated with more depressive symptoms, lower resilience, and lower self-esteem. Self-esteem plays a role as a mediator between the relationship of self-concept with depressive symptoms and resilience.•Our observations inform future interventions that target self-concept for youth mental health.
