Positive psychology is the movement in psychology that studies the conditions and processes that contribute to the optimal functioning of people, groups, and institutions. Research within positive psychology can be divided into three sections. These are: positive subjective experiences, positive individual characteristics and positive institutions and communities. This article deals with factors that contributed to the emergence and development of the positive psychology movement, its critics and future challenges. Possible applications in teaching and learning, at work, in clinical settings, in personal development and in building positive community are presented.
