This edition of Pomponazzi's Quaestio de genitis ex putri materia is based on ms. Paris, BnF, lat. 6533. This Quaestio, discussed in 1518, offers a substantially traditional interpretation of the problem of spontaneous generation. However, it also brings to the fore Pomponazzi's awareness of the contradiction between some empirically observable phenomena and the results of mere theoretical reasoning. Even though, in the end, Pomponazzi sided with Latini, his main purpose was to show that Avicenna's hypotesis of man's spontaneous generation was a coniectura, which could neither be proved nor be disproved.
