    Journal Article

The aim of this article is to present a new approach to defining color terms applied in Wielki Slownik Jezyka Polskiego (The Great Dictionary of Polish), which is currently being worked on. In the introductory part of the article the author reviews the ways of defining color terms in selected major Polish dictionaries. The following types of color terms are investigated: I. Adjectival color terms -- consist of one word such as 'zielony' (green) II. Nominal color terms -- consist of one word such as 'zielen' (green) III. Derived color terms (adjectival color terms) -- consist of one word such as 'zieloniutki' (very green) IV. Compound color terms such as 'niebieskoszary' (blue-grey) V. Compound color terms such as 'czarno-bialy' (black-and-white) VI. Compound color terms with a modifier such as blado-, jasno-, ciemno-, jaskrawo- etc. (pale, light, dark, bright) VII. Color terms used only in relation to specific designations VIII. Color terms derived from the names of flowers, precious stones, fruit etc. The author concludes with a short analysis of the basic color terms (also referred to as 'focal' colors) with reference to the process of color categorization.
