Melting temperature of UO sub 2 and UO sub 2-- 2 wt.% Gd sub 2 O sub 3 fuels irradiated in a commercial LWR were determined by a thermal arrest technique in a burnup range up to approximately 30 GW d/tU. No decrease in the melting temperature was observed on both UO sub 2 and UO sub 2-- 2 wt.% Gd sub 2 O sub 3 fuels with increment of burnup to 30 GW d/tU. It was also found that the Gd sub 2 O sub 3 addition below 2 wt.% has no influence on the melting temperature. 18 ref.--AA
