Highlights • Human skin dendritic cells (DCs) are heterogenous and functionally specialised. • Factor XIIIa+ dermal dendrocytes are resident dermal macrophages. • Dermal CD14+ cells, previously defined as DCs, are monocyte-derived macrophages. • Dynamic changes occur in the composition of recruited ‘inflammatory’ DCs and resident DCs in inflamed skin.
