Milford Wolpoff and colleagues at the University of Michigan joined the doubters yesterday, saying it was not the remains of modern humans' most ancient relative but the fossil of an ape. Judging by the back of the skull, Toumai did not habitually hold up its head and walk erect -- a crucial difference between apes and humans -- according to Dr. Wolpoff.
