    Stergar, Eva
Data on smoking prevalence in Slovenia and selected European countries in adult population and secondary school students are presented in the article. The data about adult population of Slovenia, ... taken from the Slovenian public opinion research, show that the percentage of smokers decreased in the period 1975-1996 from 30.4 to 26.4, mainly due to smoking cessation. According to theWorld Health Organization's data smoking prevalence in adult population in the European region ranged from 22.3% in San Marino to 52.3% in Bosnia and Herzegovina. There are different patterns of smoking according to gender in different groups of countries (approximately the same for both genders, more men smoking than women). Data from different researches, made in the nineties among secondary school students in Slovenia, show an increase of smoking initiations and of regular smoking in the first half of the nineties. Differences in smoking prevalence according to the type of secondary school and year of schooling were established. Data from ESPAD about smoking among adolescent students, aged 15-16, in different European countries show distinctive differences among the countries, according to the time of startingsmoking as well as according to the smoking prevalence and prevalence for both genders.
