    Energy potential has to be examined at each location where we intend to build, upgrade, modify or otherwise affect the environment. It is very important to properly take advantage of natural energy ... resources of a certain region, so that we can treat domestic energy resources rationally and transparently. Today, we tend to make as high efficiency as possible (both technological and economic terms) of energy plants and equipment. All this in order to minimize harmful impact on the environment and to maximize the utilization of what we have available and with that we guarantee the sustainable development of specific area in terms of energy technology. In our case, we focused on the area of Savinja-Šalek region (SAŠA region) to study the possibilities of utilization of its energy potential. The focus is on the exploitation of coal (lignite), according to the fact that the mine has quite a stocks and that there is located the Velenje Coal Mine, where they are extracting lignite for the purposes of Thermal power plant Šoštanj. The paper illustrates how to with the highest efficiency as possible exploit the conventional energy source with the minimization of harmful environmental impacts. Further in the paper is described the use of renewable energy sources that exist in the SAŠA region. These are primarily geothermal, solar, biogas and biomass. Of course, coal energy is of vital importance for electricity and heat production for SAŠA region and whole Slovenia.Some of the processes for renewable energy sources utilization are also described, with an emphasis on the exploitation of unconventional low-temperature geothermal resource (spring Topolšica, Dobrna, SnovikŽ.). The thermodynamic models of geothermal plants that could be integrated into the local environment of the SAŠA region are shown.
