  • Power consumption in aerated vessels of cylindical and square cross-section
Sršen, Darja ; Koloini, Tine, 1940-2008 ; Žumer, Miha, 1937-2013
The gassed and ungassed impeller power consuption was measured in cylindrical and square cross-sectional vessels with different sized Rushton disc turbines. The liquids were tap water and of two ... different concentrations carboxy methyl cellulose - CMC - water solutions. In the absence of gas the power consuption in a fully developed turbulent flow regime was 20-40% lower in a square vessel than in a cylindrical vessel for the same impeller. In CMC solutions the Reynold's number range was 100<Re<1000 and the difference in power comsumption were very small. The introduction of gas causes a significant drop in power consumption. The efficiency of gas dispersion and power comsuption depends strongly on the flow regime. In unbaffled square vessels at high Re number and high gas flow rate, the gas dispersion becomes ineffective due to vortex formation and flow instabilities.
