  • Development and rheological characterization of a new hydrogel inspired by mussels [Elektronski vir]
    Ruan, Hengzhi ...
Hydrogels have received extensive attention in the field of soft materials due to their biocompatibility, high water content and flexibility1 . However, conventional hydrogels usually have poor ... mechanical properties, and consequently further applications are hindered. In the present work, we report a physically crosslinked hydrogel with semi-interpenetrating polymer network. The network of the hydrogel consists of natural polymer gelatin and zwitterionic polymer poly[2-(methacryloyloxy) ethyl] dimethyl-(3-sulfo-propyl) ammonium hydroxide (SBMA). In addition, inspired by mussel chemistry, dopamine was introduced to the hydrogel system, which allowed the obtained hydrogel to adhere to different types of surfaces. The formulated hydrogel has significantly improved mechanical properties compared to similar hydrogels, self-healing properties, anti-freeze properties and is electrically conductive. The rheological properties are investigated using a custom rheo-optical setup of the hydrogel precursor solution and its polymerization-crosslinking. The adhesion properties are also investigated via a rheo-optical tack test. Furthermore, we explore the influences of different external stimuli, including temperature and pH, on the mechanical properties of the hydrogel through dynamic mechanical temperature analysis.
