  • Congenital ocular toxoplasmosis
    Kraut, Aleksandra ...
Congenital toxoplasmosis constitutes a serious health hazard, frequently associated with cerebral and ocular damage. Ocular toxoplasmosis represents asnecrotising chorioretinitis, and is an important ... cause of blindness or visual handicap. It can be present at birth, but in most patients it becomes manifest during adolescent or early adult life. Its diagnosis is clinical by pathognomonic ophthalmoscopic picture. The treatment is partly effective for active lesions. Preventive measures for congenital toxoplasmosis are continuously recommended by educating women on how to avoid toxoplasma infection during pregnancy, and by early (prenatal) diagnosis with proper treatment. Toxoplasmosis from the ophthalmologic point of view is the most common etiology of posterior uveitis, accounting for 25% of posterior uveitis cases by several statistical data. In the University Eye Clinic of Ljubljana, 101 patients have been treated for severe forms of ocular toxoplasmosis in thelast 10 years (1989-1999).
