Seamen are special group of workers who are working on a ship in a group of 18to 20 persons. They are absent from their homes 6 to 7 months and stay many times several weeks on open sea. Usualy their ... ships stay in ports less than 3 days. While working they are exposed to warious charges and are threatened also by infectious diseases, mostly by malaria, upper respiratory tract infections and sexualy transmited infections. In years from 1994 to 1998 4 to 5 seamen have searched for health assistance each year for malaria, 21 seamen for upper respiratory tract infections and 18 seamen for sexualy transmited infections. Great majority of cases were found in Africa. 63% of examinations for malaria were performed for members of deck service. Majority of sexualy transmited infection cases were discovered in Asia. Statistically significant differences in number of health aid searchers were found between different services on a ship (deck, engine and general service). We think that main causes of differences are averagely lover of education in deck service and greater exposure of deck service to unpleasent influences of natural and working environment. Causes for such situation should be more carefully analysed.
