  • Circulating hematopoietic stem cells in patients on hemodialysis
    Šmalcelj, R... ...
CFU-GM (granulocyte/macrophage colony forming unit), BFU-E (erythroid burst-forming unit) and CFU-GEMM (granulocyte-erythroid-macrophage-megakaryocyte CFU) assays using peripheral blood were ... performed in a group of hemodialysis (HD) patients (N=21), and in asmall control group of healthy subjects (N=4). The HD group consisted of 12 male and 9 female patients aged 22-67 years (median 46 years), on HD for 60 (7-141) months. The control group comprised healthy men aged 25-30 years. The results for CFU-GM and BFU-E were expressed as the number of colonies per 10 5mononuclear cells. HD patients: 4 (0-16) CFU-GM and 11 (0-45) BFU-E; controls: 12 (6-15) CFU-GM and 25.5 (14-40) BFU-E. For CFU-GEMM results were expressed as absence or presence of growth (4 growth in HD and none in controls). The differences between the groups were examined and only CFU-GM proved significant. In HD patients there was no correlation between the numberof circulating progenitors and the number of leukocytes, erythrocytes orplatelets. A possible influence of the following factors on these circulating hematopoietic stem cells was tested: iPTH, blood transfusions, aluminium containing phosphate binders, EPO, age, HD duration and patients sex. No association was found. In patients undergoing HD the No. of circulating CFU-GM was lower than in healthy young men; while for CFU-GEMM andBFU-E no difference was found.
