  • Use of roughness parameters for planning surface texturing

    Based on previous studies, in which it was found that the negative value of roughness parameter Rsk (skewness) and the high value of the parameter Rku (kurtosis) leads to a reduction of friction, we ... checked the possibility of using those parameters for planning surface texturing in order to achieve favorable frictional properties of contact surfaces. In previous studies it was already proven that Rsk and Rku can be used for planning textured surfaces with grooves. In this study we examined if Rsk and Rku parameters can be also used for planning textured surfaces with dimples. To investigate this, steel samples were laser textured in manner to achieve micro dimples with different spacing between dimples and different volume of the dimples. Lubricated tests under boundary lubrication regime were done to evaluate their influence on friction. It was confirmed that higher Rku and more negative Rsk can be also used for planning textured surfaces with dimples.
